Masquerades used to be repositories of community histories, enforcers of its laws and protectors of its values. They represented the spirits of ancestors. They were secretive but not secret cults, into which only male children were initiated. And because you could not tell who was behind any given mask, they were able to enforce tough laws impartially. More importantly, certain masquerades by their routine portray local creation myths. The Igbo learned masquerading from the Igala.

@Yawd Oldschool I shared what I learned - my roots are very deep, especially in Nri where my ancestral great-great-great-great-great-great grand-mother came from. If you know better, please share - cite the authority in Igbo culture who taught you. I rest my case.
