Very thorough review. You've done a great job demonstrating the use case for the Tonex. I think a lot of people are confused about what the pedal is and does. I'm a bedroom player. I like to jam covers. I have some decent(ish) gear, but I don't own lots of expensive amps and cabs. I've love the digital emulation concept, but have had middling results with plug ins. Thought about springing for a QC or a Kemper, but it seemed like the tech was still a bit immature. I still mainly play on a Marshall DSL and couldn't justify the cost of those devices when i could upgrade to a nicer tube amp. For me, the Tonex offers tremendous value. It's all about your personal use philosophy though. I got the Tonex on Friday and played with it over the weekend. This is just my experience as bedroom metal player. My signal chain is Jackson SL3 > MXR 10 band EQ > Tonex > Seymour Duncan Powerstage > Mesa 2x12 w/V30's. I bypass cab emulation on the Tonex. This pedal is pretty revolutionary because of the quality of the tones that can be produced at this price point and the flexibile, open nature of the eco system. The stock tones are pretty meh for my use philosophy. I'm sure they are accurate but a bone stock jcm 800 isn't exactly going to melt your face off. There's a TON of incredible user tones on Tonenet, and you can try a lot of amps you wouldn't ordinarily try. I've never been able to produce tones this good, and it feels lively and responsive when I crank the volume. One of the tones I gravitated towards was an Engl e530, 808 overdrive, mxr eq combo. Holy face melt. I'd probably never have had a chance to play with this combo otherwise. It's really easy to search for gear you want to try out and load it - just drag and drop. I can use the gear I already own with it. For $400, in my application, this is next level.

I think the Tonex pedal's main strength is for users already using Tonex in their recording rig that want those sounds in a pedal. Having said that, it's also a pretty good value if you're looking at a Quad Cortex or Kemper, but don't need the onboard profiling function and you just want to use the presets along with other effects pedals you already own. Thanks!

Yes, good suggestion! Here the trick is that with the real deal and the profile phase inverted, the less volume (LUFS) you get, the better is the profile. The perfect profile phase inverted vs the real deal should basically give silent...The Freq graph of the real deal+the profile phase inverted, gives you an idea of where are the differences in terms of frequency rappresentativo. Nevertheless...I will try to explain better in a video. Thank you!

First, please keep making videos about the ToneX pedal. Now, I feel that the ToneX pedal competes favorably with the Iridium and ACS1. All three pedals primarily provide amps and cabs. But the ToneX provides an infinite number of amps and cabs - ie: you can add free or paid models, rather than being "stuck" with what the manufacturer provided. I use my ToneX with an HX Stomp, so the compressor, etc in the ToneX are not so important to me. In fact, I play through a class D power amp and a guitar cabinet, so even the cabs are not that important to me. I hope more and more amp-only captures will become available. I may or may not do captures of my own someday, but for now, I am content being able to add amps that others have profiled.

Great comparison! Despite the accuracy, I like Kemper and ToneX the most. I still don't like QC, it lacks the bottom end and sounds worse to my hears. Concerning the all-in-one vs single pedals solution, I would say that you're right: in live scenarios every pedal is prone to fail but to me it's a pro, not a cons. Unless you're very unlucky, if the failing pedal is not the amp (the ToneX in this case), you can still play without an effect. If an all-in-one solutions fails, you cannot. That's why every pro has a backup (2 Kempers, 2 OC, 2 Axe, etc.). Very expensive but that's a con, in my humble opinion.

@@SSVplus Yes, I should have said “gigging musicians” instead of “pros”. Speaking of which I’ve never seen a gigging musician with 2 backup pedal boards (even though I’m sure there are) so this proves my theory even more. If we step up the game to the “John Petrucci” level, of course nothing in this post applies.

Ciao Leo, recensioni sempre super approfondite!
@LeoGibsonGtr
Жыл бұрын

Hi, I have not done an head to head comparison, therefore I'm not quite sure...I can say that both units have good latency values and reacts well to our touch. Out of phase tests are really informative! Now the quality of capture is in order tonex->quad->kemper. For more info it'll be great if you show the same test not only on plexi but with other your recently used amps: Friedman, Soldano, Fender twin. Tonex is the king now. Maybe you will interesting in create profiles in NAM (Neural Amp Modeler) free VST plugin?

Hi, thank you for your suggestion...yes, maybe in future videos I will do also that test...I already have done the captures of the Plexi in the Kemper and QC, therefore I have to do a lot of work to do the captures of the Friedman also for the QC and the Kemper. Leo, your English sounds terrible, but guitar sound is great, and it is a pleasure to see your reviews 👍

Man Leo, your videos are always insightful, but you have to get rid of that talking head AI. I can't focus on anything about the pedal with that talking head there, especially in such a weird position. At least put some shoulders on it!

😀...the Digital Shoulderless Leo...unfortunately, so far, the software does not allow me to do that....but it help me a lot to reduce the time I spend filming and editing...therefore having more time to spend on the music...I hope you understand. Thank you!

@@LeoGibsonGtr Haha, yeah I feel you man, I am sure it takes a some time to make these videos. The videos are great, maybe a suggestion would be to put the AI in a circle and put it somewhere else in the video. I hope that helps! Good luck with your future videos. The comparisons you make on these videos are very helpful and I hope others on KZitem find them valuable as well.

You don’t flip phase, you flip polarity. Please use proper terms. Phase is a Time relationship.

In my DAW it is called phase...is it wrong? Thanks

If you reverse the polarity of the speaker jacks, you reverse the phase. If you have two speakers in parallel, one with correct connectors and one with reversed connectors, the speaker phases will be opposite AT THE SAME TIME. How do you explain it?
