for those wondering about what the hell they are doing: the leading hand held high and being rotated is the command to the pilot to "spin up" his engines to full power for the launch. he keeps giving the command until the pilot has done that, and conducted a last flight control check, and salutes to show hes ready. Then the shooter points at all the crew still involved in the launch to confirm they are happy with the launch, and if no one objects, he drops down to give the "fire/shoot" order. the delay between the action and shot is because hes not actually pressing the button, thats another bloke off on the side of the deck, who keeps his hands up away form the controls until the shooter drops. the reason everything is so overblown is its a really loud environment, with a jet on full military power screaming to fly, and everyone is busy, and possibly tired form many hours of very high concentration work, so hand signals are big, loud and obvious so they cant be mistaken. the dancing is just for fun, though.

@@rumrnr78 Literally every country with aircraft carriers uses a variation of this system. There's just not too many ways to efficiently communicate information in that environment, particularly when you consider that basically every major nation has to train for the possibility of working with foreign soldiers who might not speak your language. For example, if NATO is called into a third world war, you could absolutely expect to see French sailors on occasion filling manpower shortages on British ships. Same goes for Russia, even internally. For example, Tatars, Buryat, Bashkar, and Chechens all speak different languages. Of course, almost everyone in those regions also speaks Russian, but would you bet your life on that chance? Because I wouldn't

To anyone who doesn’t know, the shooters are pilots themselves but assigned to ship duty! This is part of how they can move up to be captains, air bosses. Brown shoes is the sign to look for, it also explains the mentality of Navy pilots being some wild crazy people! I got to work alongside many of these wild people being an enlisted ships company in the Air department. The hardest workers though are the green shirts putting in sometimes 18-24 hours a day depending on if they had to change the wires. Wikipedia says the "shooters" are pilots as well. They look to be pointing to various crew on the flight deck to make sure they are aware that the launch is taking place, and then gives the command for the pilot that he's clear. He doesn't look like he's holding anything so I guess the pilot has control. In one scene you can tell he's stalling, it looks like he's waiting for another launch you can see in the background.

first time really looking at the shooter phenomenon and always wonder what they do. Being Irish I have to say Hovermaster 4000 is correct, makes anyone who loves liberty, and what the patriots of 1775 stood for VERY PROUD! May God keep these brave men and women safe on and off duty and bring them safely home to their proud love ones! Massive Respect going out!!!

I just bumped into this video. It is now officially my favorite video on the planet! I am 64 years old and damn I want a yellow shooter jersey to get in the pose do a final check of all stations then raise the gun. That is just the coolest thing ever. I'd get a cortisone shot in both knees and my back to get in that pose once!
I loved watching this video. I toured the Lincoln, based in Everett WA. An unbelievable experience and something I will never forget. God speed to all those that serve. America would be in a world of hurt without you.

@@jotdee5265 from everything I have seen, shooters are not pilots. The LSOs on the back of the carrier that assist in landings are pilots.

Yes I know exactly how you felt. A number of years ago there was an article in the paper that said something similar to "U. S. Air Force jets flying off the USS Nimitz...." It still infuriates me when I think about it. I was a flight surgeon in the early 80's, CAG 17 USS Forrest CV-59 and CAG 15 USS Carl Vinson CVN-70. The best years of my life.

@@richardmarshall433 hubby (Navy) thought he'd succeed in teaching me what my dad (Army) failed. NOPE, didn't happen. One story I still remember was my dad, after trying to teach me the different ranks multiple times, asking me, "if you were to enlist how would you know who to salute". well, young me figured I'd be at the bottom of the barrel so I came up with a solution I thought would please my dad, I told him, "easy, I'll salute everyone".. not the answer he was looking for lol

Classic! 340 people don't get how a bit of humor breaks the monotony and helps keep personnel alert. Know and fully understand that if you are in any military and disapprove of this video, your troops despise you for being a maggot. This USAF MSgt (Retired and loving it) approves.

Outside of actual combat, the flight deck of an aircraft carrier might be the most dangerous place a military person can be. A lapse in attention is easily as fatal as a bullet or artillery. And, as others have said, it is very difficult work. If they can put a bit of fun into it, all the better.

brian hampson Russia does as well, their only aircraft carrier just burned up in a shipyard because of a “welding mishap” in late Dec 2019. It certainly wasn’t a threat. Anywhere it went it traveled full time with a tugboat because it was so prone to breaking down.
