"Everything is growing really fast and really quick" is also my problem with both my planted tank and my vivarium for my geckos - I did not expect to have the success that I did with all these plants I put in there, which means the tanks are just turning into jungles.

Really nice video! If you want to get a small animal to live in there, you could consider mourning geckos. They are pretty small, but they don‘t require live foods and have very interesting behaviour. It’s a species of only females that will clone themselves to lay eggs and you can feed them with a fruit paste that’s easily mixed from a powder. I have a colony of them in my vivarium and they are super cute and fun to keep, as they are very low maintenance, will do really well in such environments and if you have too many, you can sell the babies for 10-30$ (depending on your region), so they can help to finance new plants or just to pay for their own food. Of all the pets I ever had, they were probably the ones requiring the least maintenance with me currently only needing to invest about 20 minutes per week to keep them happy and well cared for while I get to spend hours just watching and enjoying them. However you would have to make sure that there are no openings in your tank, as the babies are very small and can escape through even very small holes. Prior to patching all the tiny holes in my tank, I had it happen more than once that I only noticed an escapee because both my cats were very angrily staring at a tiny (like 1.5cm long) gecko sitting on the wall.

I heard that juvenile melanochrysum tends to rip when they come out, and once they mature, instead of new leaves coming from the petiole, they come from just a cataphyll and have a lower chance of ripping. Mine always seems to put out half formed pale leaves, so I ut it in higher humidity to see if that helps.
@KG-ul5bp
2 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree! My melanochrysum always had issues when it was young - in high humidity it stopped. Same for Philos like white/pink princess - when they were juvenile, they always had problems pushing out the leaves, so many got damaged outside the terrarium. Now that they are more adult and grow new leaves from a cataphyll, they don’t got any problems - not even in 40% humidity ☺️

I have no idea how people keep high humidity areas like this from growing mould. If I don’t leave my plants to dry out mould gets everywhere. Is it because these closed terrariums require an hour a day to dry out/ get air in? Please someone let me know
@wkoppelaars

Springtails! And or isopods. They eat dead stuff and mould, works amazingly. Also they will not spread to yhe rest of your house because they need the humidity, so no problems there.
@dewantoroo
2 жыл бұрын
Yep. Agree with comment above. Springtails is solution for your mold problem. You might not see the mold go right away. But over time when your springtails population grow bigger, it'll solve any mold problems. I also found sterilize your growing media (coco coir, sphagnum moss, moss sheet) before you assemble your terrarium will lessen the possibility of mold growth. For my small terrarium i kinda did the same thing with benji on the fogger thing, i made a hole on the back of my terrarium but i divide it into two, one for the misting fog and another one for the air circulation where i put a vaery small blower fan (the same type that usually used for laptop fan) at the end of it. So it'll pump fresh air into the terrarium. And i set both the misting fog and the fan on timer.
How long and how many times do you let the fogger run ?
