Love the P-40. That would be fun, challenging yourself with a campaign flying something (not necessarily the P-40) that you are not already good at.

y'know, it would be really cool actually if you ended up having to actually fly an evacuation mission from zunino. I doubt it's a thing, but that would be an awesome mission, having to get off the ground, take out some guys if you can and make your way to your new airfield.

Love hearing you gush about military aviation history. Just a thought, if you're interested. Have you thought about doing a campaign as one of the all female units? Gameplay wise, I know it wouldn't be much different, but I love the idea of the intro story from the perspective of a member of one of those units.

From what I've heard, the P-40 isn't modeled well in IL-2, At least not in Great Battles. Apparently the engine is suppose to be very durable and able to run at high power for ridiculously long ,making it a pretty fast aircraft. But the engine timer ingame doesn't reflect this, taking away one of the big strengths of the plane. Other than that, Its strategy was basically just a drive by in the sky. Dive in on one go, avoid any prolonged turn fights, then leave fast. Like you said, not exactly versatile, but reasonably effective.

You are not far off. The P-40 is modeled very by its spec sheet from 1938 before its first flight. The manifold pressure, sustained RPM, and WEP time are all taken from a spec sheet written up by Curtiss before its initial intro into the UAAF. The problem with this is that the spec sheet is very dialed back from what the plane is actually capable of. During the war, every nation to field the P-40 had their own spec sheets written up for the P-40, and all of those were far closer to reality than the Curtiss one. But unfortunately, 1C used the Curtiss spec sheet, so in-game, we get a gimped P-40.

This. Very few things it was up against could catch it in a flat endurance race. So you climb up super high, find some poor bastard to dive on, then leg it in a straight line long enough to outrun anything and then slowly turn and climb back up to do it again. If shit goes sideways and for some reason you're going slow enough that somethings fast enough to catch you, your only real option is to hit the floor and punch it in a straight line and pray. Though it sounds like this particular game has made everyone's engines super durable so it probably doesn't work out great here either.

Yes, they have modeled the engine very conservatively in-game. However, considering that the Soviets generally only had very poor quality fuel available for it at this stage of the war, I've always kind of figured it roughly balances out performance-wise.

The ones I like was the Free French flying for the USSR the Normandie- Niemen with their Yak 1 and 7's in mid 1942 then transfered to Yak 3's in 1944. Which by then the Allies offered any aircraft in service both western UK/USA and Soviet and they kept their Yak 3's until VE day as they said it was the best fighter by far other than at extreme altitude above 16,000 meters but at 10,000 and below it dominated even the P-51D!. They was easy to spot as they sported the tri colors on the spinners on their Yaks of the red white and blue of the French flag.

You've probly answered this before, somewhere, but I have a question: Would you consider the IL-2 series a good "intermediary" flight sim? I've got tons of hours in stuff like X-Wing Alliance and Squadrons, and some time in BF1942, but I tried DCS and all I managed was to do was have Russian warnings playing as I pancaked as soon as I took off (in the tutorial). I don't have a great stick or anything (a dying Logitech Extreme 3D Pro).

A quick answer is "Yes". IL2 is in a "light sim" sort of category. It's very playable, with a good set of aircraft and theatres.

If you want a combat flight sim that is committed to overall accuracy, but doesn't require you to attend a training course to fly each plane, then yes, IL-2 is exactly what you're looking for :)

@@SorcererDave I don't know how much historical accuracy I'm looking for, if I'm honest. If it's remotely believable and I don't have to buy a new stick to play, I'm probly happy. Based on the replies, I'll pick up 1946 and see how it goes. I'll just be trading shield and power systems for flight trim and having to worry about G-forces... what could go wrong? 😅

if you had .50 cals or hispanos taking out a from above through its weaker roof armor is possible, but with those .30 cals only if the tank is of open top design or actually just a truck with a gun on it which was more Russia's thing than Germany

Only 24% pilots survived the war unscathed, 51% were killed on operations, sending women to this is the sign of weakness, lack of honor and stupidity, which is very popular this days.
