Fun fact: A lot of the gigants didn't fully break up when they hit the water so people would have survived the initial shootdown and crash but drowned due to injuries or no means of escape.

I take it the P-40s in this movie are F models with the Rolls Royce (Packard built) Merlin engine which equipped much of the USAAF and some of the RAF fighter wings during the Tunisian and early Italian campaigns? Although not necessarily superior in power to the contemporary Allison engines, the Merlin engines used gave the Kittyhawks a markedly greater range (due to the Merlin's superior fuel economy) and a significantly higher service ceiling which translated into much better high altitude performance than that achievable by even late war Allison-equipped models.
@kittyhawk9707

mush ..No these are not F's .. the Merlin Powered P40 didn't have the scoop on top of the cowling ..also the plexiglass behind the cockpit is the P40 E style .. later ones had a more square shape
@mushmorant9253
6 жыл бұрын
You are correct about the features of the aircraft shown not corresponding to those of the P-40F. However, this movie might be more historically appropriate if it had included some F (= Kittyhawk Mk II) and possibly also K and M models (= Kittyhawk Mk III) which were more current at the time in question. By early to mid 1943, the E model (= Kittyhawk Mk I), though still in use, was largely obsolete as a front line fighter I should say.

I don't understand why that supply mission was flown in daylight. The 323's were slow transport aircraft. Originally they were gliders and had to be towed by 3 fighter aircraft to get them off the ground and then before landing they were released to conduct a landing. Then engines were added. While they had some onboard Maching Guns they needed figher escort. It seems that this was not provided in the numbers needed most likely due to the logistical and combat situation. But still why made such an important fuel resupply flight of so many of these fine transport aircraft in broad daylight. What courage those flight crews must have had! I hope German Air Sea Resue boats were able to pick up those that bailed out and survived. I found I felt for the Germans and the Allied Airman watching this video. I am combat veteran and indentify with both sides when it comes to those who actually are required to go in Harms Way.

My dad was one of the Kitty Hawk Pilots in the SAAF 4 squadron who attacked these planes that day and shot down one ME 323 I just need to clarify some facts. There were in fact 3 SA Kittyhawk squadrons - 2,4 and 5 ( 7 wing) and escorted by the Spitfires of SA’s No1 squadron, which was part of the RAF wing. The South Africans claimed shooting down all of the ME323s. Not sure if there were any USAAF in the fight and don't think there were?

Not very smart to send so many transports across in daylight without significant fighter cover eh? Are the B-26s historically correct or just for fun? My impression was that most of the Luftwaffe transports evacuating Tunisia were shot down (in various "massacres") by P-40 Kittyhawks (of USAAF, RAF and SAAF), Spitfire Vs (RAF), P-38s (USAAF) and Beaufighters (RAF).

I believe that this or a very similar incident happened just after the WW2 Operation Torch landings in North Africa. Hitler had decided to send reinforcements/supplies/fuel to the remains of the German Army in Tunisia by air, but the British had full knowledge of the German Plans via their Enigma/Ultra Code breaking activities at Bletchley Park in the UK. However it was not straight forward as the British had make it look like the interception was just lucky so as not to let the Germans know that their codes were being deciphered. The German plan to send the supplies by air was a complete failure, with most of their planes shot down. The German Army left in Tunisia surrendered on mass shortly afterwards, thus finally freeing all of North Africa from German control.

Boeing B-17, B-25, P-38, there to escort the B-25s, and Spitfires to catch transports on the ground. B-24s, scoured extended logistical support. Doolittle's (CO) masterpiece fell foul of faulty US suppliers (engines, infamously) Allied logistics and bad weather (the US army was entrenching to fight the Battle of the Somme all over again.) The US army had a major problem with one particular officer -replaced with Patton. The RAF had developed a rudimentary dust deflector. April is a bad time for sandstorms, the Allies had no choice as it was a secret race to stop the Axis. Poor Axis radar choice meant the static presented worse problems for them. Tedder and Spaatz, decided to regroup. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Flax. At that time in USAAF hands the P38 was the best 'plane anywhere. It was a shame we never put our own engines into it. I'd like to know how it would have coped with pairs of contra rotating Grifons or 30 litre die nmmsels. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_engine#Asymmetrical_yaw

Dan I am no sure that is right - would not a single down cause a dig in and make a cartwheel more likely whereas a balanced two down would dig in less and .. yes mess the blades up but not flip the machine ? i have often wondered about prop strikes and whether the crankshaft gets munted at the same time. I am an old and mad glider pilot (IS28B2s mainly )so I never had the fun of doing any of that... :-))

He noted large numbers of JU52s flying in late morning and then out again a couple of hours later. All very punctual. So he got on his radio and some days later, the JU52s met a squadron of Beaufighters. Guess what the result was ?

Incredible Aircraft, but it should never have been used in the Mediterranian Sea area without massive fighter cover. In Russia it worked very well, but to use it when Axis Air Power was on the decline and Axis hold on North Africa was almost finished was fool hardy. Rommel wanted to evacuate North Africa to save his troops to fight another day. This was a very wise recomendation, but was not used and the rest is history. Hitler put more men into North Africa after the Battle of El Alemain then in all the months during Rommel's great successes. Passes understanding.
