So, I had fun in this little dogfight, but it really had me shaking my head. Tactically I blew it from the get go...understood. I mean, I jumped into a nest of several P38s just for the fun of it, knowing I would die, but wanting the challenge.
But some of the tactics of the P38s here were suspect from the beginning to the end. And it's not a fluke. There are a lot of people not understanding how to fly the Americans.
Turn fighting low and slow with a P38 is not a terrible idea. Believe it or not the American pilots found the P38 had a pretty incredible ability to turn, especially if you varied the two throttles to help the turn (lower the inside engine throttle, raise the outside engine throttle I believe). In fact, they did better in the PTO against the Japanese planes than in the ETO against the booming and zooming Germans.
But they can turn fight pretty well only if you NEED to. These guys didn't need to at all. They were impatient and paid the price when it could have been a quick, clean kill on a Bf110 that blew it initially. The first P38 I shot could have straightened out and dragged me for the second to dive in for the kill. Instead he climbed then came back DOWN with me and turned sharply, making it hard for his buddy to take me out.
Then they both took turns hanging around with my gunner until he filled them full of holes. One catches fire and bails out, the other crashed later and died.
A tactic the real Bf110 pilots used was to immediately start a wagon wheel, turning sharply. Anything that came in front got the full blast of those nose guns, anything that got behind got hit by the gunner. They were able to turn remarkably well and had powerful guns. They were dangerous in a turn and the allied pilots respected them, starting from the first encounters early in the war.
I see this a lot on some servers. It doesn't need to be that way. Say no to flying the American 1944+ aircraft like it's a Yak. If you are bombing bring an escort and don't get the thirst if you find an "easy" target. Fight smart, live longer.
