1284. mendh-
English : ‘to pay attention to; vivacious’
German : ‘seinen Sinn worauf richten, lebhaft sein’
Derivative: m(o)ndh-ro- ‘munter’
Material: Sanskrit mēdhā́ ‘wisdom, insight, understanding’, Avestan mazdā, mazdāh- n. ‘memory, recollection’, mazdāh- m. name of the highest god (*mazdhā from *mn̥dh-tā);
Gr. μανθάνω (secondary present of) μαθήσομαι, μαθεῖν ‘to learn’, Dor.-Aeol. μάθη, Ion. μάθος n., Ion.-Att. μάθησις ‘learning, instruction’; μενθήρη ‘forehead; thought’; perhaps Μοῦσα (*μονθι̯α) ‘Muse’;
Alb. mund ‘can, win’;
Welsh mynnu ‘to want’, Cornish mennaf ‘I want’, mynnes, mynnas ‘to want, will’, Welsh go-fin(n) ‘to desire, to ask, to request’, Cornish govyn ds.; Gothic mundōn ‘to look at’, mundrei ‘goal’, Old Icelandic munda ‘to aim, to strive’, Old High German muntar ‘eager, cheerful’, muntarī ‘zeal’; Old High German mendī ‘joy’, menden, Old Saxon mendian ‘to rejoice’;
Lithuanian mañdras, mandrùs ‘cheerful, exuberant’; Latvian muôdrs and muôžs ds. (*mandus), muôstiês ‘to awaken’; Old Bulgarian mǫdrъ ‘wise’. Indo-European men-dh- through contraction from *men-dhē- ‘to focus the mind on’, cf. Sanskrit man[*z]-dhātár- ‘the thinking one, devout’, Avestan mąz-dā- ‘to impress on memory’ (from which mązdra- ‘understanding, wise’). - From Gr. προ-μηθής ‘provident’ (Dor. ā-) it seems possible to conclude an Indo-European *mā-dh alongside *men-dh- (like gʷā- : gʷem-).
