The ILO PROSPECTS programme in Kenya demonstrates the industrial training model to overcome skill mismatch challenge faced by the labour market, while improving employability of host and refugee communities.
In 2021, seventy youth aged between 15-34 years, from both host and refugee communities in Turkana and Garissa Counties, Kenya, were equipped with hands-on industrial welding skills through the programme.
The programme targeted youth, especially females and persons with disabilities, to enhance their employability and entrepreneurship capabilities. The training adopted a dual learning approach where the youth attended institutional learning, which included classroom sessions and practical hands-on exercises, and work-based learning at different industries across Nairobi County.
PROSPECTS seeks to increase the number of refugees and members of the host communities with enhanced skills enabling them to access and fully participate in the labour market. And, this is one more step in the right direction.
