Lord! I remember taking these from New York to Prague in the 1960s. As soon as the plane took off, the flight attendants distributed big glass mugs. Then they re-filled them with Pilsner Urquell throughout the flight. As long as you could lift your mug, they would fill it. That - plus the opaque fug of cheap Czech cigarettes. These were Flights from Hell, but now they make bittersweet memories of youth.

"OPEN REVERSERS 5 SECONDS BEFORE TOUCHDOWN" Totally standard to go "Full-Reverse-Thrust" - "during the flare" on pretty much all rear-engined aircraft of the period. Think; doing a south-bound decents into > Genoa-Turin-Venice-Milan having just crossed the Alps meant the cabin crew had to clear the cabin, and on advise to the captain; he would go "Full Dumps+ Full-Flaps+Full-Reverse, and do his best to drop like a stone. NASA sent people to the UK to experience this on commercial airliners (Hawker Siddeley-Tridents) when they were exploring adding reverse thrust to the Shuttle. It made decent planning a non-issue.............

I read somewhere about 10 years ago that they use the clamshells as an airbrake without using any thrust to slow the aircraft down. Because the are not part of the wing the aircraft loses no lift so it is an effective way to lose speed quickly on final approaches.

Amazing these very loud and smoky machines are still allowed in European skies. Granted these magnificent Soviet era anachronisms are like flying museum, but I sympathize with my fellow Belgian citizens living in the vicinity of Liege Airport enduring the noise that only an aviation enthusiast can appreciate. Noticed these soviet planes have neutral (in this case) or negative dihedral (anhedral)? Very manœuvrable but impossible to fly without active yaw damper. And I counted ... 18 Windows pieces on the windshield (B787 has... 4!). Definitively a dinosaur.

@@CarolLynnWilliams So? Actually the DC-9 was based on a Froggy design called Caravelle. First flown in 1955 it was the first passenger jet featuring rear-mounted engines. Also the first passenger jrt aeroplane designed for short-haul transport. The idea was to have Douglas as licence-build the Caravell for the American market. It seemed to work, until Douglas realised they could make more profit with a similar aircraft of their own...
