Always an interesting exercise, John. However, Ringo's "It Don't Come Easy" was written and recorded in 1970 (basic track in Feb or March, and completed in October) ! . Therefore, I feel it would be crucial for the album and arguably would be one of the very best songs on it. Well, it would be on my own version of the LP, at any rate. Thanks for doing this - good fun!

MeanMrMayo good point joe..cheers! Mind you if we’re talking recording then much of Ram was recorded in late 70....so I don’t think it’s a crime if that rings track turns up on the 71 Lost Album! Cheers!

Well, IDCE was both written and recorded in 70, I think. Not to be contrarian just for its own sake, but I'm wondering if some of RAM was indeed recorded in late 1970? I ask because I am preparing to possibly make my own response video for this, and I checked a Beatles Recording Sessions Book (by Weiner) for the very purpose of seeking out more and better Paul material for the "1970 Lost Album".. but did not seem to find any other 1970 songs done other than for the debut "McCartney" album. ...? ...

These songs prove that they had at least one more top Beatles album in them, they still had that 'Beatle magic' ! Regarding Ringo's contribution maybe John or Paul could have come up with something for him, e.g Teddy Boy with Paul harmonising on the high notes or even Apple Scruffs could have been made to suit his vocals. Dream on !

Hi John, I spent a lot of time thinking about this in 2008. It became quite an obsession of mine for a while. My aim though was to select primarily from the Beatles solo material that had been written or conceived before they split. To do that I had to spend a lot of time investigating which songs I could select from. I also worked out statistically what the ratio of Paul, John, George and Ringo songs would be, based on the previous albums and also just how many tracks there would likely be. I am a publishing designer so I also put a lot of thought into what the album cover could look like and did what I could to make a credible mock-up. Like you, I made a CD with my selected tracks and I dressed it in the cover mentioned above. It was meant as a gift for someone that was moving abroad. I remember how he had to double-take when he unwrapped it. Annoyingly, all my work to do with this is on an old computer that I haven't been able to start for some years. A few years ago I wrote to you John via KZitem PM to ask about solo songs that you understand to have been written before the Beatles split. You actually replied with quite a detailed list. Sadly though that message has now been lost due to the withdrawal of that part of KZitem. There is much more I would be happy to share with you regarding this but … I would rather not do it publicly. I wonder, do you have a Facebook account? Sorry to sound so cryptic but you will no doubt understand when I share my thoughts. Cheers

I've watched this review a few times and I love it so much. I have an idea for a fantasy album but it might not be a good enough one for you to do but here is the concept. imagine after magical mystery tour the Beatles decided to split for the year of 1968 but they still stayed friends and went to india together. What would Pauls solo album be and his say singles and the same for john. A song that might be lost in thought for 1968 is "Hey bulldog" George may have an EP ? Ringo might easy to decide. Even if it's not worthy of a review, it would be nice if you or any viewers could put their selections in the chat. As John didn't write any of the Beatles singles in 1968 it would be interesting to see what you guys would choose if it were three from john and three easier selected ones from paul.

It's funny. I started making "fantasy" Beatle albums in 1984 when Julian Lennon released "Valotte" after a friend of mine said that maybe he can fill in. Since then I've made "fantasy" albums almost every few years or so. I think I finally made my perfect collection. It continues with Julian until 2001 when we lost George. Great video. John. It's good to see the subject is still alive. Now I think I'll go listen to my version of The Beatles' All Things Must Pass album. It's their best. Although the live album I made up is a good listen. But ATMP and Band On The Run are great listens.

Had a stab at this a few years ago but found it difficult, I'm not a big solo McCartney fan so was short on listening though I had heard most of his solo catalogue, Ringo I had totally failed on... So here's another stab at it after re listening to McCartney and Ringo... My preposition for this two album set is the Beatles took a break and came back to the studio in '71 having found peace with each other and with a wealth of material... I Could not decide on a title so just titled them 'Vol: 1' & 'Vol: 2'... SIDE: 1 1 Imagine … Lennon 2 What Is Life … Harrison 3 That Would Be Something … McCartney 4 Crippled Inside … Lennon 5 Another Day … McCartney 6 Love … Lennon 7 Ringo Star … I'm The Greatest VOL:1 SIDE: 2 1 Cold Turkey … Lennon 2 Junk … McCartney 3 Loser's Lounge … Ringo 4 Woman Don’t You Cry For Me … Harrison (demo 69-70) 5 Smile Away … McCartney 6 Beware Of Darkness … Harrison 7 Instant Karma … Lennon SIDE: 1 1 Maybe I’m Amazed … McCartney 2 Apple Scruffs … Harrison 3 It Don’t Come Easy … Ringo Starr 4 Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey … McCartney 5 Jealous Guy … Lennon 6 Eat At Home … McCartney 7 Mother … Lennon VOL:2 SIDE: 2 1 Working Class Hero … Lennon 2 Back Seat Of My Car … McCartney 3 George Harrison … Run Of The Mill 4 Oh My Love … Lennon 5 Every Night … McCartney 6 Back Off Boogaloo … Ringo 7 All Things Must Pass … Harrison Uncredited Track (plays after a short silence)… My Mummy’s Dead ... I think 1970 is a little ambitious for another Beatles album that year following the Let it Be soundtrack. I think it's more likely that they'd have released a new album in 1971, had they stayed together, and only after each did a solo album. McCartney, Plastic Ono Band and a single LP version of All Things Must Pass would have all happened in 1970, I believe, regardless. Then they could have gotten back together in spring 1971 and put out a new album in summer or fall 1971. So I think looking at Ram, Imagine and the more commercial/poppy stuff from ATMP is the best approach to piecing together a next Beatles record. Because of song lengths, I think it's best to look at it as 4 Paul, 4 John, 3 George, 1 Ringo. I'd take Dear Boy, Uncle Albert, Oh Woman Oh Why, and Back Seat of My Car from Paul. Jealous Guy, Gimme Some Truth, Oh My Love and Crippled Inside from John. What is Life, Wah-wah and Behind that Locked Door from George and of course It Don't Come Easy by George for Ringo to sing.

That's a great list! Also, the list is rooted in the reality that the Beatles had many songs in the works, and the list excludes songs that would not be available or ready for inclusion on the 1970's LP. There were some songs that I would have included, but I know that there was a limit to 7 songs per side. Technically, being as their songs were getting longer, I would limit each side to 6 songs. The Beatles could have easily put out a double-LP, six songs per side, they had that much good material available. I would love to have hear Beatles do 'Gimme Some Truth' and 'Well Well Well' by John, and Isn't It A Pity and What Is Life by George. 'If Not For You' would also be nice, but that song is a collaboration with Dylan isn't it?
@1nelsondj

I'm watching this again because Mark Lewisohn is in the news saying he heard a tape of John, George and Paul talking about making an album after "Abbey Road" where they would each bring in 4 songs and Ringo 2 songs if he had them. Paul said he didn't think George's songs were up to the standard until "Abbey Road" to which George replied, "It's a matter of taste." The problem with John's idea of taking songs from their solo albums is they never would have sounded the same as group songs. John's Beatles songs especially had contributions by the others which is maybe why he was unhappy with some of the results. Their first solo albums in 1970 were very different, Paul's was truly a solo effort, John's was spare, minimalist and George's had higher production with a variety of musicians. By the way I'd have considered adding Ringo's b-side 'Coochy Coochy' to the 1970 album, he wrote it himself unlike the rest of the "Beacoups of Blues" album.

Hi John nice album - but however I feel that your selection is a little too on the "down" side overall (especially side one) and lacked a more positive feel. (I know they were probably all 'down' at this stage). I have made a list as follows. I have seen some comments below with people including 1971 tracks etc, and I am sticking to 1970, and also no Ringo. I have included "Remember", but I dont think its an opening track, so it opens with "What is life?" Also I substituted "Instant Karma" for "Isolation". Also I think "Apple Scuffs" fits as it speaks about the groupies and is upbeat. I have tried to sequence it evenly, and I finish with "Mother" with a good fade out for the album: Side One: 1/ What is life 2/ Instant Karma 3/ Every night 4/ Look at me 5/ Remember 6/ Apple Scuffs 7/ Junk Side two: 1/ Maybe I'm amazed 2/ All things must pass 3/ Man we was lonely 4/ Love 5/ I found out 6/ That would be something 7/ Mother

With the songs becoming longer, no way would 14 tracks fit on a single LP anyway, I'd bump it up to 19/20 and make it a double! And if kept to 14 tracks, your selection seems a bit George light, seeing that this was year of his masterpiece, Isn't it a Pity would certainly deserve to be on, at the expense of Teddy Boy or Junk?

Very interesting. Come And Get It could easily have worked as a Beatles track, and Isn't It A Pity could certainly have worked for the group. All in good fun. Does make you wonder what songs they would have recorded had they stayed together. Also, makes me wonder what songs they may have never written. The fact they were all on their own sort of forced them to write more songs than they ever were expected to write for a Beatles album. Also, this freedom allowed each one of them to maybe over indulge themselves in any direction they felt they wanted to which I think at times led to some weak tracks on their solo albums. Paul became overly domesticated, John, overly political, George, overly religious. Had they stayed together I think some of these tendencies would have been kept in check. Who knows. Still, a nice grouping of songs.

This might be the slowest response in history but this view hits the nail on the head. It might be tempting to think the Beatles could have produced great music indefinitely. However each of their peaks staggered to produce great music on a continual basis when they were together and early in the seventies. (John, Paul and George each had their main peak at the age of 26.) As the seventies progressed, there is anecdotal evidence they would have lost momentum, but who knows...

Hello John-Went back again to watching this video as well as your 1971 imaginary Beatles album and over the past year or so Ive had fun researching and compiling this "Lost Beatles album" and what would have looked and sounded líke had it been released 50 years ago, say circa late 1970 early 1971. Some of the songs in truth were rehearsed and played during the Let it Be sessions or written in India and before officially breaking up. Of course compilations like these get more scope when we realise that in 63, 64, 65, 67, 68 and 69, the Beatles recorded material enough for 2 albums a year... no need to squeeze 1970 onto 1 album . Why not 2? Good fun..

Great idea, although John's two album contributions from 70 and 71 are that strong in their own right, they suffer when taken out of the original context - same with George (aside from the jam disc). Both John and George's material was so strong at this point it gets hard to cherry pick, and they fit into an overall mood. Paul maybe less so, and especially with his debut, where the standouts appear pretty obvious. Ram is a little more consistent. I think it gets easier in future years to pick the standouts, but then it is a case of them being able to compliment the songs from the other three as a sequence.

Interesting John, and a pretty good list, what is the bonus ringo track you've got, I would have a few bonus solo single's non album cuts thrown in there as well being, Give peace a Chance, B side God. What is life B side, Mother, Ringo's, It dont come easy ,B side isnt it a pity. Another day, B side Apple scruffs. Instant Karma B side Cold turkey or ooh you. very hard to pick , a lot of great songs, cheers.

Only major change I would make John, is I would have to have the John Lennon masterpiece God on this album. I always find this track very honest and moving in retrospect of what was to follow.

Wouldn't the next album have been Let It Be anyway, but filled out with stronger songs perhaps? This is mine with the formula John proposed (4 songs each for JPG, and 2 for Ringo "If he wants them."): Maybe I'm Amazed Don't Let Me Down Isn't It a Pity What Is Life Across the Universe Let It Be It Don't Come Easy Cold Turkey All Things Must Pass Instant Karma! The Long and Winding Road My Sweet Lord Get Back

1. Wah, Wah, (Harrison) 2. Hold On (Lennon) 3. Man, We Was Lonely (McCartney) 4. Awaiting on you All (Harrison) 5. Love (Lennon) 6. Junk (McCartney) 7. Well, Well, Well (Lennon) 8. Maybe I’m Amazed (McCartney) 9. Isolation (Lennon) 10. Beaucoups of Blues (cover by Ringo) 11. All this must pass (Harrison) 12. I found Out (Lennon) 13. What is life (Harrison) 14. Teddy Boy (McCartney) Harrison deserves 4 songs because I think his first album is far better than McCartney and better than Plastic Ono Band. I’ve left off God, Mother and Working Class Hero , even though they are superb , I just think these should be left as solo. Ringo gets a song as usual. I was struggling to find 4 songs off the McCartney record, even though Maybe I’m Amazed is one of my favourite songs, I didn’t like his first solo album.

Love the concept! Here are my picks - I've tried not to go for all the obvious choices and I've also tried to sequence the album properly. Would love to know your thoughts :-) 1970 'LOST ALBUM' 1. What Is Life 2. That Would Be Something 3. Well Well Well 4. Without Her 5. I'd Have You Anytime 6. Every Night 7. Hold On (Provided/If only it was at least a minute longer!!) SIDE TWO 1. It Don't Come Easy 2. Man We Was Lonely 3. Isolation 4. I Dig Love 5. Oo You 6 Love 7. Apple Scruffs

First there should have been a Beatles Live 1970 album, and then afterwards every here and then a new Beatles album with songs they considered Beatlesque enough ... just in the fashion of what you compiled here. For the plenty other songs they could have done their solo albums. Enough material. Band On The Run to me is a Beatles album anyway.

A good list of songs. I'm not sure they would have done "My Sweet Lord" cause of its religious references imop. I think "Apple Scruffs" would have been better. I'd like to see "O0-You" on it from Paul. John you forgot Ringo wrote "Coochy-Coochy" as the B side to the "Beaucoups of Blues" single.

The Beatles' final album: 14 tracks: Sequenced as stated here: 1. I'd Have You Anytime 2. I Found Out 3. Junk (McCartney's solo career?) 4. My Sweet Lord 5. Well, Well, Well 6. Look At Me 7. Isn't It A Pity....ends side one. 8. Maybe I'm Amazed 9. If Not For You 10. Working Class Hero ( a frickin Lennon classic) 11. Every Night 12. God 13. Teddy Boy 14. All Things Must Pass finishes off a terrific album. In the end, it's dominated by the songs of Lennon/Harrison with McCartney bringing up the rear. All taken from their first solo albums. Love discussing this topic. Nice job, as always, John.

John Heaton Same to you and yours, John. By the way, had the Beatles all agreed that this would be their final album as a band, I’d have called it “Epilogue.” Not all that original but I think it would have been fitting. It would be interesting to hear titles from the rest of your followers. Take care.
