Hey guys! Thanks for clicking on my video. I just wanted to say that I am aware that Dream Jelly recently uploaded a video on a similar topic. I don't want anyone to think I copied them, so I just wanted to make it clear that I've been planning to make this video for months and was already nearly done making it when Dream Jelly uploaded their video. I haven't watched their video yet because I didn't want it to unintentionally influence me, but I'm sure we each have our own unique takes on this topic, so if it's a topic that interests you, I strongly encourage you to watch both our videos! Okay thanks, bye!

It's so annoying when people accuse folks of "copying" so and so bc yall made content discussing similar things. Theres like 8 billion people on this planet(give or take), it's not at all unfathomable that two or more people have the same or similar ideas on something independently. I'll always give people the benefit of the doubt rather than immediately accusing them of copying someone else's idea.

It sucks that after the industry received (valid) criticism about how they gendered games, it seems that they decided to just not make 'girl' content professionally anymore. The strongest modern entries to the genre are farming sims (a trend started by an indie dev), mobile games (the 'casual' scene), or entries to previously popular franchises (like AC:NH or the recent Cooking Mama). Weirdly, today it feels more okay to be a 'girl gamer', but not to make 'girl games'.

i remember playing imagine fashion designer as a kid but i very quickly got stuck when one of the missions asked me to design “lingerie”, a term i’d never heard before. i tried a bunch of different things at first, but i failed the mission every time. finally i went to my mom to ask her what this elusive “lingerie” was, and obviously she didn’t want to have THAT talk at my age, so she told me it was another word for nightgown. of course, i had no reason to think she was lying, so i took her at her word and kept trying to design a nightgown, but it still failed every single time. eventually i gave up on it, figuring the game was broken. in hindsight. it’s more than a little weird that a game aimed primarily at children asked you to design lingerie and just assumed you would know what that is. honestly even just calling it underwear would’ve been a lot less weird

When i was little i really wanted imagine fashion designer but my parents never let me get it because i was a "boy". Even as someone who grew up as a boy "girly" games were always something o really wanted. Harvest moon and rune factory were huge parts of my childhood and i only recently found out that apparently a lot of people considered those games to be for girls back then which was pretty surprising. I remember i used to always try and "borrow" my sister's games because she would never let me play them, sometimes o would try and check out games like that from the library (my local library when i was a kid had a TON of games available) i of course played tons pf other kinds of games but i was always drawn to the girly stuff which looking back makes a lot of sense. Hello! I love that so many are getting interested in the Imagine series and loved this video! Just gonna leave a few cool facts about Imagine! I hope you don't mind. I have been researching and playing Imagine and petz games for a few years and there is a lot to say about both franchises. The main thing is some of the imagine games are multiple Japanese game series that ended up being reskinned and localized as an imagine game. (same for petz games) Imagine Master Chef (Imagine Happy Cooking in EU and AU) is from a series originally released in Japan called Oishii Cake Okusan for the Game Boy Color in 2000. It was made by MTO (most petz games are MTO games) Only two of the 10 games released outside of Japan: Touch Pen de Tanoshiku o Ryouri (Happy Cooking-US and My Happy Kitchen-EU) and Edamoto Naomi no Shiawase Kitchen: Kakushi Aji wa Anata ga Kimete ne (Imagine Master Chef-US and Imagine Happy Cooking - EU and AU) Another interesting thing is that some of the Imagine games that only released In EU actually got localized in the US outside of the Imagine series. Imagine My Restaurant was released in the US as Gourmet Chef: Cook Your Way to Fame. Imagine Champion Rider 3D was released in US as Horses 3D and EU as Alexandra Ledermann 3D. (which is also the name of many of the petz horse games in EU) I have more facts but I'll leave them out because they are related to other imagine games not included in this video! I also wanted to say Lets Ride FF is my absolute favorite! I basically maxed out everything in that game and the song that plays is actually one of my favorites 😅🤣

I've been thinking about this for a while too!!! I remember having hamsterz life on the DS and it being a really cute game, and then hamsterz life 2 on the DS was so incredibly melancholy, almost depressing in contrast. I learned to love the vibe as I grew up though. Hamsterz life 2 on the GBA is just a Hamster Club game ported to the west. I'm not even sure if there's a hamsterz life 1 for the GBA, haha
@Sunnylight200

@@nessiejoe My most shocking experience was with the Dogz GBA game. Dogz GBA is a reskin of another Japanese game and Dogz 2 GBA is just Dogz 1 that was re-re skinned! Sometimes the second game isn't even related to the first at all. There is a possibility that the hamster game you're looking for was released outside of the Imagine and Pets lineup. I'd check some more Ubisoft hamster games to be sure!

You should not be bathing your buns with shampoo, and they don't hold food with their front paws like hands and-- I really hate it when pet sims that wanna be realistic in presentation but do a terrible job at teaching how to manage a real pet. My favorite girly game lately is a fan translation of Sylvanian Families for the Gameboy Color, called "The Fairyland Pendant". It's essentially an RPG where you don't battle, but have certain tasks to complete for the village that level you up. You can collect furniture for your room, like buying playsets for the Sylvanian Families dolls, which have effects on the story. I also like the collecting seeds and growing flowers, too. I know that I would have loved it as a little girl. I'm sad it didn't come out at a time when I really needed it, but as an adult I'm crazy obsessed with it. XD

Doesn't giving bunnies a bath literally risk k1lling them? Like their body goes into shock bc it gets cold after you take them out of the water? That's potentially dangerous to put into a game with no disclaimer about these Bunnyz aren't directly analagous to real-life rabbits. Having that expectation that the Bunnyz are just like rabbits in real life and should be treated and cared for the exact same way could have some pretty bad consequences, especially if children and parents aren't prompted or encouraged to do their own research before going out and getting a real pet rabbit.

As a girl gamer. I started playing video games at the age of 2 in 1989. My first game system in order was the NES, SNES, N64, PS1, GBC, Original Pink see through GBA, PS2, Red GBA SP (still have), Crimson red ds lite, blue dsi, aqua 3ds, red 3ds xl, pikachu 3ds xl, wii u, nintendo switch oled, pink nintendo switch lite. As for girl gamers in the 90's I knew very few other girls my age who were into gaming at the time. When I was playing my super nintendo one of my grandma's neighbors who was a girl a few year's younger than me had Sega Genesis & the game gear & loved Sonic while I was into Mario & DK. We played Sega Genesis at her house a few times back then. When I was playing my teal GBC right before I upgraded to the original Pink see through GBA. I accidentally got my younger cousin also a girl hooked on Rugrats Totally Angelica GBC game. We stayed up until midnight at a sleepover at my grandparents house playing it back & forth she kept getting stuck on the pinball mini game so I had to play it then hand it back. Long story short when I upgraded to the original GBA I ended giving my younger cousin my old GBC with either pokemon red or blue also ducktales gb, & mickey speedway gbc so they would have several games to play on it. She gave to her older sister who more so wanted it & told me her parents (my aunt & uncle) were getting her the gba & a copy of rugrats Totally Angelica gbc. I could have gave her my copy because I beat the game 5 times over back then but still my favorite. Ironically I still have all my GB, GBC, & GBA games~ 😁🤣

For whatever reason during the 2000s up until very recently there seemed to be far fewer female game developers and the games got worse. Her entire library was all of these girly shovelware games, and out of curiosity I tried playing a few of them, and I did not "get" any of them. At first I thought that maybe it was because I was a boy and boy psychology was fundamentally different than girl psychology that I would not be able to comprehend the appeal of girl games, but looking back I'm realizing that I never once saw her play any of these games herself, so she probably didnt like them either and just wasted her money of them because "those were the games she was supposed to play" 😂😂😂 No wonder she liked Pokemon so much, it was literally the only good game she had!!!

(KuruKuru Princess ~Tokimeki Figure☆Mezase! Vancouver) Theres also "imagine makeup artist" which was actually " Cosmetic Paradise:Makeup Miracle" a sequel to a game called "Cosmetic Paradise" theres probably more but idk. Hi I wanted to add something! I got a game cartridge with a bunch of ds games as a gift in 2014, which doesn’t seem very legal but whatever, I was a child and don’t even know where it came from. Anyway within the selection of games there was imagine babyz. I remember playing it and getting tired of it pretty quickly and the touch controls didn’t always work. But I had Imagine games that were actually good! Imagine teacher has a kinda repetitive gameplay loop but is actually fun to play, at least it was for a 10 year old. But I revisited it recently and it was actually fun! There is also Imagine figure skater that I liked a lot as a kid. It has a very anime style, so I did some research like last week whe I remembered the game existed and turns out it absolutely is a japanese game that was rebranded to sell better around the world. The 3D models are crappy but the gameplay loop makes up for it with fun mini games and the game becoming more challenging as you progress. There is an ice skating competition system with increasingly difficult figures to do draw because you get less time to draw them and more of them to do to get high scores. The artstyle and gameplay are good so I recommend it. Another game I really enjoyed and get sucked into once I start playing is Fashion Designer Style Icon (at least that’s the name of the file, not sure which region this name applies to). Basically you work in a clothing shop and the main gameplay is cutting, sewing and ironing pieces of clothing with a time limit. The challenge is that you have a timer and a limited amount of mistakes permitted (otherwise you have to start over the mission) and you have to switch between the correct tools and draw with the stylus exactly on the lines to cut things and make sure you don’t stay in place for too long with the iron to avoid mistakes. It also have a plot with cloth eating bugs! (Idk what they’re called bc English isn’t my first language) I didn’t know about this plot as a child because I never got past a certain mission but it ads to the challenge because you have to select the hand tool to swat them away while you work. But the game is pretty entertaining with an annoying side character with an inferiority complex. Basically you start as the owner’s assistant, then she hires the side character guy, and 19 y/o looking guy that is often disrespectful and doesn’t like being reminded that he is inferior to you, then the owner goes away after like 5 missions and he is now your assistant. While the guy is annoying, it adds to the game’s ambiance and depth which is honestly nice. Sorry for the rant, here are some cool ds games though

Very valid, your criticism on games' treatment of women and girls. It's interesting, knowing how often they've always been here in gaming, despite being shamed and hidden more often than not, and what games over the decades actually gave genuine gender freedom and representation within them versus others. Virtual KZitemrs seem to have finally brought more girl gamers to the spotlight, which has been very encouraging.

It is important to remember that sexism in gaming and the hyperfocus on boys and men as gamers is not the case everywhere. Japan in fact always had games for both girls and boys. just like how there is shounen and shoujo anime. Gaming culture is not the same everywhere.

it's pretty obvious, but kawaii anime games ubisoft -scalped- published were from long running japanese game series like kawaii koinu, hamster club, hamster monogatari, kurukuru, oshare wanko (inhale) himawari doubutsu byouin pet no oishasan ikusei game... ubisoft essentially took the good name of the original Petz series, scooped up random japanese games from totally different series, changed a ton of graphics in even more random versions to make them less anime, and then piled them together with their random european scrapes and shovelware. I'm not sure which of the imagine/petz titles are developed in-house, but most of them aren't. the naming schemes dont help AT ALL since dogz 2 is different than dogz 2 which is different from dogz 2... so everything is an inconsistent jumbled mess. also, the jp titles i mentioned were squarely targeted at elementary/early middle school students. It such a shame since "girly" games provide a totally different form of gameplay from like rpgs and such. i think people could benefit from a good "girly" game.

Did anyone play Crystal's Pony Tale for Genesis? It seems to be a pretty early example of a game designed to specifically draw young girls to a console. I loved the atmosphere and music when I was a kid. The gameplay was confusing but it added to the mystique - I have no idea if it was a "good game" but it kept me coming back

Somewhat related, there is a factory game called satisfactory where the only playable character is female. The game is not strongly marketed to any gender from what I could tell, but the factory focus of the game may not appeal to women as much. I just find it interesting and enjoy role playing as a lesbian couple with my boyfriend when we play together :)

It may be true that the career-oriented games focused predominately on stereotypically feminine careers, but the fact that they even had the idea to center games intentionally made for girls around *career paths* is pretty remarkable. There are plenty of games about stereotypically masculine jobs, but I can barely think of any that explicitly try to present them to the player as possible careers they could pursue in real life.

Since i watched Jelly's video i did a little research (5-10min google) and from what I can tell, the better titles in the Imagine Series, werent made by Ubisoft, but instead localised to English and their original titles and boxart changed to match the rest for whatever reason. Which honestly annoyed me because I never would have known there were decent games thrown in the mix. Also i think (i might be wrong) that the lack of quality girl games was more prominent in the Western countries, because places like Japan seemed to have lots of very cutesy games for women and girls, for example otome games.

i had a super long comment typed out on my phone but my phone is dogshit so it reset the youtube app when i spent too much time in my browser looking for a game. so this is the cliffnotes version of my comment. 1. PLEASE make a good girly games vid. my three sisters and i all had various versions of the ds and had so many games. 2. shamus underwater adventure or something like that by activision was a game i really enjoyed. it was challenging but in a good way. the controls were kinda weird and awkward iirc. i either never fully beat it because i got stuck or after beating the final boss it didnt save your progress, so i played through most of the game so many times. not sure if this qualifies as a girly game cuz im an autistic agender person with a terrible conception of how general cishet society genders stuff. 3. drawn to life is a thq game that i enjoyed a lot as well. i think it may be a rip off of scribblenauts but idk which released first and have not seen scribblenauts gameplay. the drawn to life story was super engaging and interesting to me as a kid and the gameplay had a good difficulty level for me at the time. i dont think this one is really a girly game based on the fact that the protag u have to play as is a guy. there may have been like side stories where you play as a girl character but i dont remember.

5. puppy luv: spa and resort by activision was a TERRIBLE game i had. i literally launched it on my ds ONE time, realized the gameplay was simultaneously confusing and boring and then never played it again. i remember passing it along to one of my younger sisters and none of us could ever figure it out or be entertained by it (it probably mostly attempted to be played by one of the twins that are 4.5 yrs younger than me bc i think my youngest sister who is 7 yrs younger than me was too young at the time).

I believe the original reason Pokemon didn't have the option to be a female character from the getgo is that it was based on the bug collecting aspect in Japanese culture. Which is mainly dominated by young japanese boys. I believe they suddenly realized the reach and fun of the game when people of all ages and from both sexes were eager to play it. The originally pokemon looked a hell of a lot more goofy and strange and became cuter and softer over time. Likely to attract younger audiences and female audiences as well. I still enjoy the original artist of pokemon because their unique style and look has aged significantly better, as well as their focus on the monsters aspect of pocket monsters. Not saying that women or girls can't enjoy these aspects but I believe it has a lot more to pull from Japanese culture which led them to believe it would only be popular with young japanese boys from the get go.
