On Indigenous People’s Day, Monday, October 10, 2016, Imam Zaid Shakir met with a group of Muslims from the Native community to Stand in Solidarity at #StandingRock.
Thousands have come from all over the world to stand in solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. Our native brothers and sisters are currently engaging in a struggle to protect their land and water from the threat of an ecologically hazardous oil pipeline. The issue here is not oil, per se, it is the consistent violation of treaty obligations by the encroaching government and corporate interests; the lack of consultation with the First Nation occupants of the land and the disregard for the desire of the people to keep their water, which they believe, as articulated in the Qur'an, is the source of life (و جعلنا من الماء كل شيء حي).
