Central PA may be one of the most undiscovered riding destinations on the east coast. Only the locals know how awesome these trails are, which makes sense. How do you articulate to outsiders how “fun” these trails are while explaining how the trails are stocked with rock gardens that have no apparent lines and no end in sight?
It’s one of those things you just have to experience. And once you do, it clicks! Sure these trails don’t possess the flow, berms, and jumps that some other destinations have but the challenge, scenery, and shear number of trails scattered throughout the Rothrock State Forest will keep you coming back weekend after weekend. If not to check more trails off your list then to keep learning and trying to figure out how to smooth out these rough and rugged single tracks.
The highlights of this Epic route are Tussey’s Ridge Trail, a jagged rock lined ridge with views of the surrounding valleys, Lonberger Trail, a old time favorite that has been around for decades and is constantly being updated to accommodate the masses, and John Wert, a flat trail that will test your mettle with it’s sporadic sections of extremely difficult rock gardens, rhodo tunnels, and more rock gardens. If you can check this route off your list without too much damage to body or bike you can certainly call yourself a “Rock Garden God”.
