I still listen to the "Nachthymnen (From the Twilight Kingdom)" album often. Scars in the Landscape of God is such a solid track

Their latest album that came out this year is also amazing. I love every album by Abigor, and their latest is actually one of my favorite! I’d love a full Abigor album review.

Just another quick wee disclaimer that Abigor are known to be friends with neo-nazis as notorious as Hendrik Möbus of Absurd and have defended their actions, going as far as calling Möbus a "friend of the band"...
@tedesco7219

One of the members also stated that he shares "parts of Möbus' worldview". In case you don't know, Möbus killed a 15 year old from his school when he was 17 and has since been one of Germany's most prominent neo-nazis.

From Abigor I've only heard the interestingly titled song "Liberty Rises a Diagonal Flame", which is even more post-black than this. This stuff here sounds a lot like Keep of Kalessin I'd say, another black metal band with "epic" and "knightly" feels. Feel free to check them out, they've got some nice songs such as "Ascendant" or "Epistemology" which you'd definitely like. But first I'd definitely like to see your reaction to Scar Symmetry - The Kaleidoscopic God

Abigor are certainly an interesting odity. They have a very long career going for over 30 years now, and are a part of the second wave, at least temporally. The same experimental elements were present in their early sound, but they were different than this experimentation. Their early stuff was almost an exercise in free form, near structureless melody. Guitars would often play melodic counterpoint, but there were almost no riffs, it all felt like they improvised it all on the spot. To make it weirder, they would include acoustic guitars and keys out of nowhere, and many German and Austrian bands that came after would pick up on that, most notably Dornenreich, whose second album could be seen as a much cruder blueprint for what Ne Obliviscaris eventually did. It's all connected, sorta

@@CriticalReactions "I Face The Eternal Winter" from the Nachthymen album is a pretty good example of chaotic melody, if you want it contained. It goes from a call and response with the keyboards, to blasting, to acoustic interludes, to a female vocal section to a folksy outro because reasons and it's all within 4:35 minutes. But even that might be a bit structured so I'd present as an alternative their Orkblut "album". I say "album" because they call it that, even though it's a bit over 20 minutes and very weirdly structured. It's too chaotic to say it's structured as a single song, though it has recurring melodies and themes, and no separation between them. It's also still recognisably the same band. The chaos seen there is more or less the one on display here, with the old stuff being more a product of that very 90s metal rule of slapping together sections just because. But same composing and same drummer. To emphasise the more or less improv nature of their early work, within 1994 and 1996 they recorded 4 albums in notoriously short recording sessions. Their average time in studio in those days was 4 days per album.

@@CriticalReactions Also, if you ever want a more modern take on the idea, the second (and last) album by the band Svartidaudi modernises a lot of the early Abigor sound by using the same approach to free flowing melodic guitars and drumming that often is just doing its own thing (which goes beyond mere blasting).

The vocals ruined this song for me. While I appreciate the skill these guys have, Black Metal is supposed to be dark and scary. Once the vocals start in this track, I can't stop laughing. There's nothing remotely scary or dark about this song. I would put these guys in the goof-ball black metal category along with Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir.

I'll suggest 'Tyende Sang' (servant song) by Afsky. I always thought the melody and chord progressions hit hard. And even more impactful with the context of the translated lyrics (kzitem.info/news/bejne/156tznh_bIGIZKQ). It is a poem by Jeppe Aakjær from 1900 in Denmark about indentured servants "the song describes the conditions many farm workers lived under. It encourages rebellion and emphasizes pride, optimism and togetherness."
