Agree. SHM CDs sound more brighter, crisper and fuller than the Audio Fidelity/NFSL releases that are flatter and warmer. Compared to the regular pressings of the albums. One album I tested was Styx - Paradise Theater that has been released on all three CD formats and could definitely hear the mastering difference. Same as Early CD pressings of albums sound much different to later remastered releases of the same album.

I'm sure I will try an SHM CD sometime, if the price isn't too high, just to compare, just in case it's better (hey it could happen). Some audio fans will probably say one could rip a standard CD with Bit Perfect, but sometimes you want to skip the extra tech and just pop a disc in the player (or "on" it since mine is a top loading Pro-ject). I almost always choose High Resolution if I have a choice in downloads, even though I only hear a difference on rare occasions.

Welcome in the rabbit hole Frank, from here there is no way back 😉. The Japanese are one of the main reasons why CDs, SACDs and some technically advanced CD versions still get a lot of new releases. I can understand the technical explanation behind SHM-CDs, XRCDs, etc but would not feel comfortable stating a general better sound as I am not sure if the mastering may have been changed and as you said, comparison may be difficult. However, I especially buy a lot of these Japanese special CD formats because of their careful and high quality re-mastering, similar to MoFi. Some of the best versions of older Jazz albums are Japanese XRCD or MQCD or UHQCD or whatever other appreviation they have developed over the years. As long as it sounds great I buy it.

Honestly, I think most if not all of the Japanese odd cd formats are snake oil. They use just enough technical jargon to make it sound plausible. At the end of the day, though, they are still just cds - 16 bit, 44.1 khz. However, not all but many of the odd formats are also remastered. Sometimes, say an SHM-CD, may be a fresh remaster while normal cds are still using an older remaster. It's the mastering, I believe, that is making the difference. I currently own 6 shm-cds. The first ones I got were Great White's Twice Shy and Hooked. As far as I'm aware, until recently, only some of the songs off these were remastered for the Greatest Hits release. The shm-cds were fresh remasters of the entire albums along with the pertinent b sides as bonus tracks. Aside from the 6 shm-cds, I also have Elf's L.A./59 aka Carolina County Ball on blu-spec cd. And Roger Glover's Butterfly Ball with K2 HD Mastering.

I've been buying Japan CD's for 30 years, most of them usually contain exclusive bonus tracks and most are a limited print run. Besides the normal CD, SHM-CD you also have HQCD, MQA-CD and I think one more format, which I cannot remember. Collecting Japan CD's is expensive, but well worth it IMO.

I always wish SNFU reissued that. I have no idea why I ever asked Chi when I've seen them. Pretty sure I've seen them 14 times since Something Green And Leafy This Way Comes. The last show may have been one of the best. It was a lousy show that they got screwed over on. But since I have met Chi so many times over the years. He hung out with us for most of the night. It was more to do with hanging out then the show. It was on a Thanksgiving. So maybe they were all kinda bummed out by the show. It was still an energetic show. Hell, I once saw them with maybe 20 other people. Was kinda weird how no one was there, but just a month or so before it was packed. The best show I've seen them at was in Toronto. Someone ended up throwing couch cushions and well, it's like it turned into a pillow fight and the foam from inside was ripped apart and thrown around. Never seen that happen at a show. But damn, what a band. Well, every line up seems to kick ass. If you weren't aware, they have reissued the albums in multiple colors. But the fact the 3 Epitaph albums are finally been reissued is the best part. And out of all the times I ever seen them live. I swear they never played Postmans Pet Peeve. Oh, since the video is over. That 7" has always been going for crazy amounts. $400 may be a bit much, but youd think $100 would be pushing it. Bet that if it was repressed by the band. It ain't gonna be cheap at the shows. But I bet $20 would be a hell of a deal. Or maybe $50 if they did a double 7" and they threw in the Real Men Don't Watch Quincy record. Those, to my knowledge are the 2 rare ones. Up there with the 3rd album cover, tour edition of their first album. Unless it was the 2nd cover. Hmm, could be an interesting topic. How many other albums are there, where they had to keep alternating the album cover? Not like Street Survivors. I mean getting sued over the 1st cover. Make a 2nd cover that is a replica that looks the same, but enough to not get in trouble, which they did. Rushing it out to replace the cover for the tour. And then eventually release it as a 4th cover. And that's the one everyone is used to. Unless by some weird chance there's a 5th cover, because CN or CP threading legal action due to the logo on the train on the cover. Now, I'm not sure. But wouldn't surprise me. So maybe there is only 3, but I'm guessing, the tea at least 4. That last one my be my imagination.

I have never heard these cds but There is a lot of snake oil now in music record company retail business if a normal cd is produced well the sound is fantastic but there is a lot of small records companies that reissue old music that the big labels don’t care about and license it out with god knows what master tapes and they don’t care how the recording sounds Wounded Bird records is one label their cds sound horrible even Rock Candy reissues are bad all they do is make the music louder and compressed i have some the Angel discography from them and it’s hard to listen to compared to a few I have that are original cds And with vinyl reissues the tapes they use are digital files and sell them at a premium price and most of the time the cd version is better I have researched on KZitem to learn about what companies are selling and I watch interviews with sound engineers and other people who work in the business saying that half speed masters audiophile records are just hype that record companies spin so people spend more dollars thinking there getting a better product as the same with 240 180 vinyl they don’t make a difference in sound but marketed like they do Record companies will kill of maybe the new vinyl market if they keep putting up the prices delivering dodgy products and making false claims .

@@Channel33RPM In order to improve CD's you would have to change them, and in return change the player. Then they would not be "standard" anymore. The old tube televisions do not exist anymore, they were "improved" out of existence. The CD was improved into SACD, which was then strangled in the cradle. The powers that be want streaming, easier to control
