Even animals that are less sapient aren't really that innocent -- they're innocent in the way a wildfire would be not at fault for doing what it's optimized to do, maybe, but the human concept of innocence really is hard to apply to anything but babies and adults on an individual-per-individual basis. @@Anonymousebean Owning exotic animals does not automatically equal to abuse or neglect. Some people who keep exotic animals give them better living conditions than most zoos. I don’t see a reason to be automatically judgemental. All animals are predictable if you are aware of their psychology. After all, even a big dog can become a killing machine if you don’t train it properly or are not aware of its needs and behaviour. Oh yeah also the “illegal exotic pet trade” is a huge thing only in relation to birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish (animals that are easily transported). Illegal exotic pet trade in relation to large mammals is extremely rare and when it does happen, it’s connected to the traditional medicine market (tigers being bred and sold for body parts, some of them may also get sold as pets). Big animals are not being sold in masse. Tbh even illegal exotic reptile trade isn’t always a bad thing. Many countries where rare reptiles come from have 0 protection measures to preserve these species, but have laws against bringing them out of the country. It is important to keep a stable captive population in case the species goes exotic in the wild due to habitat loss and pollution. The reason Travis attacked his owners is because he was given a medication that is unsuitable for chimps which caused hallucinations in him. If this haven’t happened then the attack in the video probably wouldn’t have occurred in the first place.

I always felt so bad for Travis, he was ripped away from any kind of natural life and drugged when he acted out. He was 13 years old, chimps in the wild become sexually mature at about 10 years old and have sex up to 50 times a day. The reason all chimp actors are prepubescent is because adult chimpanzees are unpredictable and often violent especially males and ESPECIALLY when they are sexually frustrated. Sandy KNEW this, she was contacted by multiple animal control officers and primatologists and urged to relocate him to a sanctuary when he became sexually mature. Travis's mother was killed after she, his father and a third chimp escaped their cages and attacked a car full of teenagers. I worked with chimpanzees in a sanctuary environment for years. We saw a few former "pet" chimps come through those gates and it was usually for one reason: They'd reached about 4-5 years of age and had become uncontrolable. At 4, a Chimpanzee is very capable of seriously harming a human of small stature, they begin to go into puberty around 5 - 6 years old and as soon as this happens, you're essentially dealing with a tempremantal teenager with the strength of the Hulk. They are incredibly intelligent animals, very much like humans with highly complex needs, but what humans don't seem to realize is, not only that same fact, but that they are not humans. A chimpanzee deals with things like a chimpanzee, not a human. When they get upset and have a tantrum, other chimps in their vicinity can and do usually handle it. A human can't. They don't know their own strength, so you might raise one as a human, but they can never BE human. It's one of the most upsetting things to see a 10 year old chimpanzee having to learn how to be a chimp again when it's spent years of its life being forced by humans to live like them in a completely unsuitable environment like we see here.

I immediately exited the video - and when I saw Meridiths interview, it brought me to tears. She is in an inspiration but I can't even begin to imagine the emotional strength she's been forced to develop. I wish nothing but comfort and peace to her for eternity, goodness knows she deserves it.

While it totally could have been the drugs or change of appearance, chimpanzees become incredibly dangerous once they hit puberty. The vast majority of chimpanzee "actors" are young and then shipped off once they hit puberty. The opening scenes showing all those chimps in a cage were ones abandoned once they became dangerous. This is behavior that happens in the wild also, chimps can be incredibly brutal to other animals and to each other. They should not be pets, actors, anything and I cringe every time I see them in movies or TV. Leave them in the wild where they belong.
@neoqwerty

the only apes with anything like an amicable behavior is orangutans (and they shouldn't be kept as pets or entertainment either, it's just that they've shown willingness to help humans even in the wild). Even the intimidating-looking males have a lot of chill for being grown adult males. (A good cue to know how threatening an animal is is to see how they handle young that aren't their own; if the females don't let the babies near the males there's an obvious reason.)

my neighbor when I lived in an apartment owned a serval. She was a "serval influencer" or something on instagram, posing pictures that made it look easy, cute, etc. but I heard her screaming at it, it damaged the shared hallway and stairs, she was always covered in bites and scratches that she edited out of her pics. These apartments were SMALL, mind you, and the thing never got enrichment or exercise besides jumping up on the top cabinets and onto the roof from the fire escape. It could make noises like the devil. On the other hand my grandmother had opossums as pets and they were happy as clams, very personable little guys. I don't appreciate gov regulation on private ownership matters but it's for the good of environmental protections. It's just the slippery slope of "well, what about snakes? fish? inverts? ferrets?" that some states could go down that tends to squick people out about exotics pet law. Hell, my rabbit is considered an exotic pet, and he's basically just a cat that doesn't meow. So it's a gray area.
@johnsgoodboy

um, no. you're mixing up "exotic pets" and "wild animals." your rabbit is domesticated, there's nowhere it can survive in the wild. the fish, herps, and inverts people keep are bred to live in captivity. there's nowhere in the wild where beta fish or fancy rats actually look like that. ALL wild caught animals are unethical to keep, and it's not a "government overreach" to say that people can't capture wild animals and sell their offspring to anyone who will pay.

To Travis, his mother stabbed him in the back and was killed while confused and terrified... I mean, he ran back into his room and died alone. It's heartbreaking. I don't blame either Travis or Charla, the responsibility entirely lies on Sandra's shoulders. There was also a similar case in which i think a panther? Or leopard was an exotic pet and attacked someone, the owner had to be the one to shoot it down... I guess it's an ego thing, but I don't understand why people want these powerful animals in their house. However, from my experience, it was when I was off Xanax or "coming down," when I would feel my worst and prone to rage. Travis may have been somewhere in that realm, coupled with the fact that he's a wild animal, and attacked Charla. Also, prolonged use of Xanax is terrible. If someone is nervous to board a flight, then Xanax may be perfect for an occasional situation. But taken every day, you'd become suicidal and lose your mind. Case in point.

All the warning signs were there. Travis' first public outburst, her husband's last request to give Travis away and even the animal expert's clear and concise warning that Travis has reached sexual maturity and that Sandra was utterly powerless to stop him should he go berserk from the isolation and lack of mates,which eventually came true. Sandra ignored all the warnings because in the midst of her mourning and loneliness she was too selfish to see the harm her "love" for Travis was causing him as she kept using him to cope with her own grief. Taking him away from his mother and keeping him locked up, that's not love; it's possessiveness. In the end both her friend and Travis paid the price for her selfishness.

Lawyers will usually demand that you absolutely not say sorry because it will be used as an admission of guilt because you wouldn't apologize unless you knowingly did something wrong (which is honestly absurd, I think you should be able to apologize without of making your sentence worse) I imagine there were a lot of complicated emotions happening. She may have been upset that her friend was suing her because she felt like it wasn't fair considering the fact that this friend also believed it was safe and was intentionally and willingly hanging around the chimpanzee. She was a widow and didn't really have much in her life outside of this friend and Travis and it must have all been very traumatic for her as well. Doesn't excuse having a chimpanzee as a pet or giving him freaking xanax of all things. Just saying I seriously doubt she was without remorse all things considered.

@@annataymond9529 I think you're justifying Sandra's actions by rationalizing them. She may have had all the reasons you said- but her actions were still dangerous, wrong, and irresponsible. She definitely deserves blame and the onus of this incident is definitely on her- no need to coddle her and her feels. In the end all those emotions don't matter- since permanent events took place and she clearly doesn't want to deal with her friend or pay for any of her bills when she can clearly afford it.

@@ANO-.-NYM I literally said it doesn’t excuse it. I’m only saying I seriously doubt she didn’t care at all, considering she attempted to pull the chimpanzee off her friend herself. @@annataymond9529 I know you said that, but it feels like one of those, "In my opinion..." situations where they use that phrase to excuse the shit they say after. I mean she tried to pull the monkey off which is fair- but then just let her friend pay the medical bills herself? Feels like she cared little considering she's rich enough to have a damn chimp. About the 30m- I would totally sue for way more than medical bills considering her negligence cost someone a lifelong injury and pain. The lawsuit is not about _just_ the medical bills, Anna. Jesus Christ... Reading that- it really DOES feel like you're excusing her shit after saying even that lol.

She was abusing that poor creature, forcing him into a life he's not ment for and not properly meeting his needs. Imagine if someone kidnapped you as a baby from your parents and forced you to live as a pet dog, feeding you kibble and making you play with dog toys and keeping you as a leash... Sneaking MEDICATION into your food and drinks to keep you obedient... I'd be pissed too. The poor thing was probably confused and scared, and his instincts got the best of him.

This is so horrific. The chimp's owner doesn't take responsibility. I used to think chimps were cute because of the way they were portrayed in movies and on TV, roller skating, wearing clothes, etc. Once a chimp is an adult, it will go crazy leading an unnatural life with humans rather than with its own kind. Ticking time bombs, all of them.

Wrong lesson to take! Don't ever assume that a medicine made for humans is also good for animals and will do the exact same thing, or that the dosage will work. There's a reason veterinarians don't go to human pharmacologists for their medicine, and why you're not supposed to treat yourself with animal pharmacology. As an example: chocolate. Humans are one of a few animals for whom it's NOT toxic. And we're one of the few animals who can deal with caffeine (protip, it's a natural herbicide, you can kill other plants with coffee).
