This is great. I've been playing as a hitter on a BB level last few years and even I was happy with my hits I thought something was not right and often I felt some pain after stronger swings. More experienced players were telling me that I am using my rotator/arm wrong and I couldn't understand it. Was always like "how the heck you can spin a wheel without spinning w wheel". Finally I see that from your video. I was 100% doing what you've shown in the improper way. The "increased Torso Rotation" & "joint is loose and relaxed" is what made a big click in my brain. Instead of spinning your arm with a joint it's more like throwing a numb arm forward with a torso :) Arm's joint just takes care of positioning an elbow. I am 40 years old .. hopefully I can still adapt to a completely different mechanics! I have to or I will not be able to swing anymore in 5 years :D Thanks!

Thanks a lot. I am an 5'7 opposite hitter and was hitting a bit low with a huge jump now applying this for a few time and regained my spike point 😊

So that explains why my shoulder hurts whenever I spike. I've been doing my armswing improperly, using my shoulder strength to spike hard. Thanks for the advice. 😊

I've recently been feeling some pain around my bicep whenever I swing, and honestly I'm pretty sure I've always used the twisting of my torso and hips after learning the technique from some camps/clinics. But, I think I may have also been forcing my arm forward at the same time. Next practice, I'll try my best to implement a relaxed shoulder and arm and see if I'm able to hit/serve again, thanks!

Nice. It makes so much sense. I’ve been playing VB at high level for years at college and grad school. Always wonder how those skinny kids can swing with that much power. I actually tried to get upper arm muscle training, but it didn’t help much, perhaps making it even worse. When the shoulder is tense you not only loose power but also loose consistency and makes more error.

Hello Isaac, thank you for your ongoing videos. For shorter hitters, what are the differences/particuliarities that should be applied to these hitting mechanics? Such as aiming deeper, but concretely, how would that translate to the swing?

Frederic C the arm mechanics remain the same no matter your size. The only thing that changes is ball contact. Shorter players need to hit further underneath the volleyball in order to change its trajectory, which means that the ball needs be at least vertical on the shoulder at contact.

Apologize for my english: if i hit with loose shoulder muscle i feel like i'm gonna hurt. So, as a protection, I try to force the movement strenghtening the shoulder. How to resolve this? If i let my shoulder muscles go loose, which one should I shorten?

You don't have to force your muscle to do anything, just do it in a way that won't hurt.

I'm not sure if you're still replying to this video but, I've got a question. I've been playing volleyball for just over a year as a middle blocker. My hits have gotten better but I know my swing is wrong because 1, my shoulder always hurts and 2, I see guys 1/2 my size hitter 5x harder. I played quarterback for years and can still throw quite far without pain... So I'm thinking it's my swing form. Do you have any recommendations on how I could loosen up the right muscles to help me execute a proper swing?

arm mechanics for throwing a football isnt much different than your volleyball arm swing, try to drive force from the bottom up (legs > hips > torso > shoulder/arm) and like the other guy commented focusing on being relaxed during your swing will produce more force as counterintuitive as it might sound

You are missing several important concepts including the use of neutral wrist the fastest way to anatomically move your throwing arm (i.e., spiking arm) across the body.

relax your arm, allowing your muscles to be more elastic, don't hit directly from your shoulder, hit with the elastic force your body generates as your torso rotates

What about special athletes like Taylor Sanders? He seems to tense up his arm when he swings and he still bombs them.
