Never thought I would be this much entertained by watching a junior climber coaching session for 13 minutes straight. Your way of thinking about the movement is so unique. Great to see you passing on that wisdom to the young! Keep up the good work, Johny! 😊

@@johnnydawesofficial Just some Finnish guy in the internet who first saw "Stone monkey" and then other people trying some of your first ascents in youtube. Your insight about climbing movement is extraordinary. I think David Graham has some similar wisdom about hidden aspects of climbing when he talks about "the box" where you need to stay in, in order to manage to stay on the wall. For us mortals it's sometimes impossible to understand that we aren't necessarily too weak to do a move, but we are just executing it with so poor technique that failure is inevitable. And it's hard to correct something one doesn't know they are doing wrong. One thing I would like to know, is did you always intuitively understand the physics of how human body moves so well, or have you consciously analyzed the movement to master it? (I hope you accept the answer, without me telling my real name.) 😁

That nose touching trick is so good! I do the same thing where I got to a final position to feel the balance so I can then link into it easier, but the nose touching trick is next level. What a brilliant way to understand the forces at work in a position when you're unstable / have a hand off. I'll be trying this out next time I'm at the gym

Typically astute and sensitive coaching Johnny..I must admit I love the way you describe the 'shapes' and configurations of hold and body..I always think about those things when I climb. I remember the advice you gave us in those coaching sessions..it always makes sense and it's lovely to see and hear it here..so much going on here..!!

@@johnnydawesofficial I did a little poking around in attempts to answer your question, and it turns out that that particular phrase comes from the video description of "Slabducation, the Movie". But, as someone who watches A LOT of climbing videos on KZitem, it's obvious to me that Talo Martin's characterization represents consensus, not flattery. And, so that you don't accuse me of mere flattery, I'll point out that you are fat, as am I. We both still have a lot of work to do to get near our climbing potentials. However, your case is unique. Whether I ever climb 8a or even 7a is of little consequence in and of itself, but your potential to contribute to the sport at large remains massive. If you were to get anywhere close to being truly climber-lean again, footage of you climbing in that state would surely be something that people like me or even current pro climbers could watch and learn from.

@@johnnydawesofficial Lol, that's probably true, which is why I have no plans on sticking around at my leaner-but-not-yet-lean level of body fat any longer. I've been doing some research on the weights of natural bodybuilders around my height (5'9") and have realized that I have more to loose than I previously thought. My goal, then, is to go from 205 lbs down to 165 lbs. Refinement of my body composition thereafter will remain TBD. I just told a climbing legend my goal...Oh jeez, I think that means I actually have to do it!😅 Ah, fuck it, I'm game.🙃

It's intuitive, kids are great at this straight out the box. "Do you know the word vector? Yeah you need that vector basically" taking to kids like adults. Brilliant stuff from the lesser spotted master of movement and explanation. If the truth can be told so as to be understood, it will be believed.
