Kick is easily overlooked when learning front crawl. Admittedly it makes up a small percentage of your forward propulsion in middle to long distance swimming, but still an effective kick is vital for an efficient overall stroke.
It's true, in triathlon you want to save your legs for the bike and run to a certain extent but you also want to finish the swim as quickly as possible without wasting energy.
