I am an elementary school music teacher, and I am using your video for a Canvas class this week on Vocal Technique. I hope you don't mind! I really like the way you explain it, plus I think you are really relatable for the kids.

You answered a question I had about diphthongs. The concept of *consciously* choosing the vowel sounds is so helpful. Thx

Actually A E I O U like you pronounce them as "pure vowels" are what vowels sound like in the normal language in my country, Portugal!

Oh this explains so much! And why I struggled a lot more with singing in English. My first language is Swedish, and for us the ɑ, ɜ, i and u sounds are all the normal speaking voice way we pronounce our most common vowels, so we are just missing the u sound of the pure vowels. (might be why everyone says swedish sounds like we are singing all the time when we are just talking, never really got what people meant by that) To me it felt like I was messing up whenever I automatically changed a vowel sound from the written down letters in the words to one that is easier to sing when I sang in English. Like I was just falling back on using Swedish vowel sounds out of comfort. Guess they are more comfortable not because they were more familiar but physiologically actually easier to sing.

Really good explanation, but, not 100% accurate. I'm looking all over for something for my choir. This is almost perfect! I do wish that you would have mentioned that you migrate to /i/ at the very end of the certain vowle foe word to be understandable. I can't share with my choir. If they follow your explanation exactly, they'll sing "bah" instead of /ba(i)/. I hear your voice singing the /i/ just as you end the word "by" such that those listening will hear "bye" and not "ba." If you have a different video that points this out, that would be great. Thank you

While we definitely believe in pure vowels, sometimes we require some vowel modifications! Try singing with an eh (as in jet) mouth shape but an [i] (as in free) tongue position. Experiment with the different and combination and hopefully it will help you in the higher chest register! The [u] (as in you) can be modified as well! Maybe try and [u] tongue position with an uh (as in love) mouth shape! Ultimately it depends on your vowels and how you use them, combined with the register where you’re singing! If you have someone to listen to you to help you hear how the vowels sound that can be very helpful! Or record yourself and listen back. Hope that helps!!
