Improvised first aid tips for victims affected by the Russian Invasian in Ukraine.
When direct pressure fails and…
You have to make a tourniquet for massive hemorrhage from an extremity.
TAKEAWAY Points:
-Arterial bleeds, amputations, complex injuries to extremities often need a tourniquet
-Recommend at least 1.5” (~4cm, 3 fingers wide) to ensure adequate compression.
Think about blowing through a straw pinching it with your nails vs. your full palm, what’s harder? AKA = NO rope
- Incorporate a windlass. Greater than 90% failure of tourniquet without a windlass. That means NO belts if you can attach a stick and twist it because it’s too rigid.
-The faster the intervention, the better. If you spend more than a minute to find what you need, you’re victim will bleed out. If you’re there providing direct pressure, you can delegate someone to help you procure and apply the tourniquet.
-Bleeding out will kill you in minutes, infections come within days and with dirty wounds, it is common for antibiotics to be used later.
