I became a big fan of the Impulse label thanks to Coltrane as well as Ashley Kahn’s must-read book, “The House That Trane Built.” Fortunately, I have been able to find many albums easily and build a sizable library. I have a long-term quest to collect every record released on the label. You can find most records for under $10 aside from the big names (everything Coltrane is $20 or more).

Some fantastic shows there Ken , I love collecting Impulse almost as much as Blue Note . I agree on ' Alfie - Sonny Rollins ' as a top album and Crescent could well be my fave Impulse Coltrane recording ( Ole ' is my fave piece ) . I am fairly new to watching your vids but am a big Jazz, Soul , Reggae , 60' s / Mod collector etc and love seeing the shared passion in a lot of you VC guys vids

You know what? I think the success of Blue Note's Tone Poet series is gonna light a fire under the asses of all these other jazz labels. Once it happens once, there's a bandwagon to jump on. I expect Impulse! to follow suit soon, and Columbia Jazz.

Actually it was Creed Taylor of CTI records who founded Impulse Records. He signed Coltrane to the label. However his stint at Impulse Records was very short.

Great video 1 im pretty sure Hartman did two solo records for Impulse. some of my favorite Impulse records however never come up in VC videos, but these are the records from Gabor Szabo and Chico Hamilton ( most of which also feature Szabo) I dont know why but they seem to be overlooked, i mean of course John C is the Don and his recordings are undoubtedly the most Important ones on Impulse but i absoloutely love Chico and Gabor as well. And also the Yusef Lateef records seem to be a bit overlooked as well..

Please keep doing what you are doing so that people like me gain valuable knowledge about which jazz records to seek out. Also, would love to hear your thoughts on MOFI jazz releases and see your collection if you have any. I know you are not too fond of MM releases :) Would be great if you can share your listening room/space/gear. Cheers from Canada!

Out of afternoon by Roy Haynes is extremely hard to come by an original. Roy Haynes Cymbalism is almost impossible. I have seen it twice in 10 years and missed my opportunity to get an original and haven’t seen an original since. Cymbalism has been reissued, but the re issue isn’t something you will just find lying around in any store, it’s usually an Ebay find. Also Pharoah Sanders early stuff was killer.

Ken Micallef Jazz Vinyl Audiophile thanks for the reply. I found a mono on eBay but it distorts at dynamic peaks - groove wear? Not sure why. I’ve cleaned it on a vacuum machine. Will keep looking.
