The final verdict is IMTs are more reliable than DCTs. The minimum cost to replace a dct gearbox is around a lac or more. The internal clutch plates of a dct are equally costly. So either go for a traditional automatic transmission or a torque converter if you want that one hand free or go for IMT

But the DCT do have a sports mode which enable you to downshift and upshift in order to overtake right?? The video could have been more informative on day to day driving scenarios that a person can face while opting between the two gearboxes.

A word or two about the driveability of the IMT in bumper to bumper traffic was missed. Is the clutch release on the IMT just as smooth as a manual? How does the IMT handle slow launch on incline? Also, a word of caution, clutch plates on dry DCTs are often considered as 'consumables' and may need a replacement earlier than a clutch in manual. You guys should have addressed these things

Hi team, late to the party, but loved the video. I have narrowed down to IMT and DCT and the venue and Sonet. My query is around 1- whether the DCT will be reliable in bumper to bumper traffic like blore where you have to take every opportunity to advance (I get that if I give space it will be fine, but if I need to reach office within 2 hours I need to creep as much as possible). In such conditions will the DCT be fine or will it wear out quickly. 2 - how jerky is the imt compared to a manual if you learn to use it well and what are its weak points (I have noted people saying issues in 1st and 2nd gear). Anyone with long term ownership (more than a year) of either car in Bangalore pitching in would be really helpful.

I have Sonet iMT. I feel lag in first and second gear because of which I have to plan my overtakes everytime. They are a bit slow.

Manual is pretty much the best option in terms of reliability. Next up would be the iMT. The DCT *WILL* fail. It may not happen today or tommorow but it will happen eventually. Especially in India where you have to creep in bumper to bumper traffic on a super hot day. And there really is not that much advantage for the DCT in this segment. Sure it shifts quick..so what? It's a small cSUV not a racecar. Moreover it's jerky in traffic and will cost a bomb to repair when it fails. If VW cannot completely make the DSG reliable even after a decade, I don't expect Hyundai to do it in a few years.

One point stated wring, iMT has higher maintenance cost 50-60 k km done and be ready for overhaul of gearbox including change of clutch plates DCT and TC will not have any issue even after you drive it for 2 lakh Km

Some drivers used to rest their hands on top of the gear lever while driving, does this confuse the intention sensor ?

I am not sure but I don't think it engages clutch as you put hand on the gear lever

I believe it should engage either when you put off foot from accelerator and try to push gear lever, if I am not wrong, now gear lever will have two-staged shift while shifting, so at about 1-2 inches it will engage the clutch and at next 1-2 it will shift the gear and once you are getting back the lever to middle it will release the clutch

6:28 That 0.1 kmpl difference though, that's if the gears are shifted ideally. I can't imagine the non-petrolhead average dude knowing or caring about shifting at the appropriate time. In practice, I feel the DCT may edge out or at the very least draw level with the iMT That being said, I never found the clutch cumbersome, and I'd rather have that or the DCT any day... Basically full manuals are the best on the highway and DCTs are best for the city...

Thanks a lot guys for the great video. Looked like you guys had a lot of fun. Now to the question, Present DCT versions in Sonet have got paddle shifters... Wouldn't that be enough to get the gears up or down?? Forgeting the cost factor, just based on comfort and ease of driving, especially in Bangalore traffic (hopefully once this Covid situation is done). would DCT be better than iMT?

If all you say are correct, why do manufacturers charge more for DCT over IMT? There must be some catch there..

Because DCT is a more complex technology - more parts, the software, the R&D required, and more adds up to the extra cost.

I request you guys to make a video on how these 3 cylinder turbo engine sounds inside cabin & how it feels after 40-50k kms (atleast with Hyundai Venue). I am already using a 3 cylinder engine car, nearly 1 lakh kms, i feel like cutting my ears when it crosses 80kmph on a smooth highway , soo annoying sound, one should shout loud to communicate inside the car after 80kmph.

Being a very enthusiastic manual driver, guys once u drive a DCT, there's no coming back. Go for DCT unless u are hitting for tracks.

Am I being too rigid when I say that I cant trust an automatic transmission. In a manual you are in full control of the shifts and revs and how the car behaves. And the automatic might have some inherent lag in it. Also more maintainence. No way I'm gonna trust an automatic on gradients and slope start/stop.

If u are too lazy for even an iMT u are better off with a chauffeur. I am totally sick of this automatic transmission trend. 🤮🤢 Manual any day and iMT is also fine as a compromise but automatics 🙄🙄🙄🤢🤢🤢

A manual transmission is more engaging - you need to be more alert to use it. At times, you'll be doing multiple things at once. It is one of the most rewarding experiences. An automatic is pure comfort. iMT is still a middle ground, but not as much satisfying as manual.

@Athi vignesh It's more fun. You get to match the revs and heel-toe downshift. You have to put in effort to make the perfect shift. Whereas the iMT will do everything for you. You just have to select the gear that you want.

@@thewanderer3282 I'm just saying about the build quality. Well nexon is not made for heavy off roading but if Tata ever makes one, they'll make it better than Mahindra. In nexon's segment Mahindra xuv300 also has only 4 stars I guess.. nexon has 5 stars
