Great review, fantastic movie, a well written story

Like most Hollywood melodramas, the characters are made to do preposterous things to make the story line reach a plausible thematic conclusion. But the actors, especially Bogart, somehow manage to salvage an uneven script. Nicholas Ray, the director and one of the scriptwriters, was apparently trying to make cinematic art out of cynical relationships in Hollywood. As with most of his films, he succeeds only in producing a movie that is more disturbing (unhinged?) rather than profound. The only sympathetic people in the film are minor characters: a compassionate agent (Art Smith), an alcoholic has-been (Robert Warrick), and Jeff Donnell as the detective's understanding wife, all of whom deserved better. Perhaps the kindest thing one can say about the film is that it treats the audience like adults who are left to figure out the dysfunctional relationships in the film for themselves. And that is in itself meritorious. But on the whole, the film is not equal to the talent of its cast.

Yes, uncomfortable to watch, but very good, one of Bogart’s finest performances. I first saw this film as a teenager back in the 60s, jarring at the time for it’s time ✅

I discovered this on TCM last night. It followed THE PLAYER, and give me a strong feeling that THE PLAYER was based on this or influenced. Thoughts?

~ Most likely doesn’t have the positive reputation it deserves because of the hard to watch unconventional non-Hollywood-like ending in particular ~

I've really been thinking about revisiting this one to give it a closer look, as it is a film that really sticks with you, particularly when Bogart's character lashes out at his friend played by Art Smith. That was hard to watch.

~ Yes, that scene was a particularly ugly one, but well done….. especially telling was Bogart’s clumsy, but honest regrets after the incident ~

Lol, it crossed my mind that the maid was killer in that scene too

Great movie. It's very "adult", in the true meaning of that extremely misused word.

I thought this was a review…with insights, analysis and opinions… rather all you did was retell the story.

Yeah that's fair. I'll generally give an overview and mention things I learned, things I liked, etc. I try to go a little deeper with more recent videos. Thanks for the feedback.
