Chile, I just had an enlightening conversation with my African Lyft driver, who trained as an engineer in Africa. (Let that marinate, for a minute). He does not understand the connection between the influx of weapons in poorer neighborhoods, our lack of community, and the careful orchestration of all this by WS. I referred him to this class. I don't speak as well as I write. Dr. Carr and Professor Hunter can enlighten him better than I can.

"Integration should have been about them respecting us". That's wishful thinking and hindsight. We did not have enough power or the numbers to drive that respect. It felt more like learning to live in an integrated world, yet not losing oneself - and remembering the fertile ground your parents and community had given you despite the odds. I remember going from my old black jr. high school with friends I had been in school with since the 4th grade to my first day in my new integrated high school with 25+ white kids in my US History class with me being the only black kid. Oh, and a white teacher too - the first one I ever had in my life. I knew that my black teachers at my old school cared about my success and health, but would my new white ones? It was more about adapting, finding out what success looked like, and proving oneself everyday.. If there was anything in the integration experience relating to "respect" it was in showing that you could work just as hard and show them that you could compete. When I had to take geometry over in summer school after the 11th grade my mother was not happy :-).

I want to thank my mentors Professor Hunter and Dr. Carr for sharing and expressing the truths about the chronology of JUNETEENTH becoming a federal holiday. I was so disgusted when I heard the news, because this is ours. My first disturbing thought was of a little blonde haired girl being crowned Miss JUNETEENTH. But I then thought of the opportunity we will have to impart wisdom and show the way for Blacks around the nation even that have no context for the celebrations, reflection, or to Pause on that day to plan our next move. Peace be with you all

As Dr. Carr says there is an entire universe of Emancipation Day (such as Juneteenth) celebrations in the diaspora formal and legalized by the respective governments . America's Social Structure is behind with recognizing the humanity of Africans as usual. Here's a list (no doubt not exhaustive): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emancipation_Day

I agree wholeheartedly with you Dr. Carr. We should make this holiday what WE want it to be- to advance the case for our liberation, to educate our children on our history. I love it. Just as I use Kwanzaa, Malcolm X's birthday (we have an awesome weekend celebration here in ATL for Malcolm's bday, Black History month etc! This year (2021) on Juneteenth there were celebrations everywhere in the ATL- like never before- from Stone Mountain to East Point!. It rained all day and people still came out with their children, even to outdoor events, in groves! The 7 yr old with me learned about the Buffalo soldiers- a group dressed as Buffalo Soldiers had a re-enactment/display! It was a beautiful day! #Juneteenth: The Struggle continues! Thanks Dr. Carr (#Howardforever) and Prof Hunter!

I was sitting in my car and a group of teenagers walked by just letting the curses fly. Our generation would never curse when an adult was near, a woman/girl was around. We held doors, helped ladies with their bags across the street, said yes ma'am, no sir. I see grown men let the door go when women walk behind them or men let a woman hold the door. I can go on and on.
