One thing I loved about this movie was that Jaime and his family are involved with his new identity rather than keeping it a secret. While I did enjoy the movie despite thinking it was generic, that element of family helped it stand on its own

Between DC's track record of failures and the writers strike that didn't help matters, especially promotion, BB didn't have much going for it. And with a cast that most people wouldn't know and a character that most non-comic fans don't know, it was hurting before it had any chance to thrive. I'm glad overall though that James Gunn saw how well they all did and is using the character in the DCU going forward. We might not get a sequel right away but it gives BB life and it makes the cast's efforts for the movie not in vain. If Marvel can do a sequel for the failed Captain Marvel, I'm hopeful DC will give a sequel to BB or maybe some kind of blended story with Booster Gold supposedly having a movie coming out. If the sequel is about finding Ted Kord, a Booster Gold story would fit right in with that theme.

I have weird feelings about this movie. While i do think it's kinda mid, I also think it's one of the best bits of live actionsuperhero media we've gotten in awhile, which says a lot about both the Marvel and the DC movies we've been getting lately. And frankly, given the quality of films like Quantumania and Multiverse Of Madness, Im shocked that this movie hasn't been received more positively in comparison.

It's precisely because of movies like MoM and Quantumania that Superheroes movies are in a funk right now, (I mean, other than The Batman for DC and GOTG 3 for the MCU, when was the last time you saw a superhero movie that was a certified banger, without any "yeeeah, but"... We basically had 2 years in a row of straight up disappointments from both aisles)? And with the advent of Barbenheimer, people rediscovered that they want the thrill of watching something unique they've never seen before, which is not exactly the case of Blue Beetle, which recycles almost every tropes of a Marvel phase 1 movie. Now don't get me wrong, I love this movie, I love its cast (been a fan of Xolo since Cobra Kai, and he's a perfect cast as Jaime, and the Reyes family truly was the shining star of the movie), Angel seems like a fantastic guy, and I truly wish this movie didn't tank as hard as it did, but I can also completely understand the critics of the movie being so unoriginal in its execution, and people skipping on it because of a poor marketing and bad superheroes movie fatigue, and inflation is hurting everyone, so after having spent all their money on Barbenheimer, and the school about to start for kids, and parents have to buy their kids supplies, nobody has any cash left for a cute but mid superhero movie anymore.

@jjstarrprod
Жыл бұрын
@@mutalemwananshiku4098 MoM made 955M because it came out hot on the heels of Wandavision and Spiderman No Way Home, 2 of the (rare) biggest recent successes of the MCU, and it was a Sam Raimi film. It also was one of the most disappointing continuity errors of the MCU that completely butchered Wanda's character arc and wasn't even a good Dr Strange story, all the while being quite a letdown in portraying the multiverse (it didn't help that it came out just a few months after Everything Everywhere All At Once). Sure, it did make bank, but it was certainly the movie that definitely kickstarted the MCU's downfall, making the audience kinda feeling betrayed by Marvel's quality control. A feeling that was only confirmed by the disappointing Thor Love and Thunder, which was a lot of fun, but none of the gravitas that a character like Thor, who's just been through so much loss and trauma, just couldn't be the same kind of Thor that he was during Ragnarok, but Taika being Taika, he did it anyway. Black Panther 2 which was arguably much better, although not nearly as good as the first one (and who could blame them, with Chadwick Boseman's passing), and with the utter disaster that was Quantumania, that completely doused any momentum built up by Loki about how dangerous Kang could be. On the other side of the pond, at DC, after their last big tentpole success The Batman, we had Black Adam, fun, but nothing groundbreaking ; Shazam 2, again, fun but nothing groundbreaking, and the first one was better... Then, the Flash, nice, but grossly overhyped. All of the movies I just cites underperformed at the box-office, with some of them down right spiraling into massive flops. All in all, that's 6 superheroes movies in a row that were meh for one year and half (with the rare exception of BP2 and GotG 3, which benefitted from the fact it was the last movie of a beloved trilogy). So even if I disagree with the audience, I can't blame them for not showing up for Blue Beetle, no matter how good it was.

I also loved this movie, flaws and recycling included. Was it original ? No. It felt like Iron Man mashed up with Spiderman, Venom and Guyver (the movie was basically a PG-13 Latino Guyver). Was it groundbreakingly executed ? Neither, lot of things we saw here was done better (and, admittedly, with more budget) in other movies. But if there is one thing this movie had in droves compared to 80% of the other Superheroes outings of recent memory, it was HEART ! LOTS of it ! The whole family thing was just so charming, and the cast was brilliant in it. And frankly, sure, the script feels like it could have been written in 2008, but that 's actually refreshing, in this era of multiverse this, interconnected that, to just go back to the basics, and just tell a compelling single character story, with a simple yet trusted theme, family, at its heart. If done right (which this film did), family will always connect more to the general audience than a super complex and obscure concept such as the multiverse. Which is exactly why the only 2 movies that have succesfully tackled this topic is Everything Everywhere All At Once and Across the Spiderverse, coz they successfully tied the multiversal plot directly with their protagonist's family. Blue Beetle is a fresh reset of the comic book movies genre, going back to the basics, and I can imagine why James Gunn did give it his seal of approval, mentionning Blue Beetle as his DCU's first character (even if not movie). And if anything, he is THE guy who understands most that poor box-office is not proportional with the quality of the movie itself (just look at his The Suicide Squad ! It completely bombed, yet fast forward a few years and he's the co-CEO of the DCU ! ). So here's hoping we'll get to see Xolo as Jaime sooner than later in the coming DCU ! I'm looking forward to it. (Btw, is it me, or am I the only one that could totally see Jaime vibe with Spiderverse's Miles Morales and Ms.Marvel's Kamala Khan ?)

@meloetta1542
Жыл бұрын
Personally the way i saw it, was that the scarab was all for that option if needed but jaime set the personal rule of no killing so when the choice came up again later in the movie and jaime was willing to break the rule out of anger, the scarab stopped jaime from breaking his own rule and most likely regreting it once the anger wore off or the scarab told him the story of his enemy

I read one argument that I’m going to butcher in an attempt to paraphrase here, but essentially there is a power differential between a boy who recognizes that he has an incredibly powerful weapon at his disposal that he doesn’t know yet how to handle and not wanting to kill someone because of it, and a family of ordinary humans up against a paramilitary operation that was clearly ready and willing to do away with them like nothing.

I don’t know if it’s intentional or not (probably not) but the choreography of the final OMAC fight had at least two video game references. Vergil’s Lunar Phase from Devil May Cry: a double areal somersault with an attack built into the move. This was done with the sword instead of the foot but it’s still the same move. There’s also Jaime blocking an assault with a bladed weapon by putting up his scarab arms like Sora blocking Roxas’ cutscene combo (but without getting overpowered and pushed to the ground)

Low and behold, the movie is already 1 year old!!! The film is another fun entry of the continuing DC universe and it feels very refreshing having a Latino-centric superhero for a change The filmmakers embrace the culture even speaking Spanish to stay close to their roots; they have the music, the food, and the community vibe surrounding it Jaime’s family serve as the emotional anchor being affectionate and protective, even if their positivity might be their downfall Much of the actors are unknowns but George Lopez is the fun comic relief Sarandon is your standard cookie-cutter villain being semi racist and her right-hand Carapax is your typical arch rival having his own armor tech at his disposal given that it’s his only purpose after suffering injuries on the battlefield I wish there was more Blue Beetle in the actual film But there’s equal doses of fun and humor without being cheesy and not relying on the dark, broodiness of previous films Plenty of inside references too for die hard comic fans A nice synthesizer score helps like a 1980s rock music video It’s good too this deals with the commentary on class warfare not just between good and evil as well as immigration and Latinos being downgraded to the help not being noticed Once in a while it’s welcome to have an ode to Latin American culture seeing the true struggles any kind of family goes through

Blue beetle sequels Tone: don’t be afraid to go darker. Some of the best moments are when Jaime suffers. Don’t be afraid to say God. Who says “the cosmos”? Jaime prays biblical prayer at one point so be consistent. Having a clear belief system for a character helps us understand his thought process. Things Blue Beetle Sequels should keep in mind/improve: other scarabs which were alluded to in beginning space scene (I am personally more interested in more scarabs than past heroes); romance: Jamie and Jenny (Peter and Gwen from TASM and TASM2 is my favorite hero couple) find Jaime and Jenny’s similarities and motives such as career goals. Speaking of which, career goals: what is Jaime and Rudy’s Jobs? Security? Inventor? Lawyer? How do they pay bills & food? villains: did any family exist among the previous security detail that was killed? Could their family/colleagues want revenge despite receiving life insurance from the very company they work for? Could they find a scarab of their own? What happens to Scarab when host dies? This could help bring Jaime in conflict with his family’s attitude to killing which contrasts with his own morals. Action: most of the fighting is great. keep it diverse even for fights without Jaime. For example when Beetle Ship crashes it could have been hit with an RPG then shaken after being hit so audience has reference when Jaime deflects/destroys/absorbs an RPG. Don’t be afraid to hurt or kill Jaime’s family. (We love them but stakes, realism, and Jaime might need it) show us how much pain they can endure and how far they are willing to go for each other. What are their limits/morals? Crazy Suggestion: Blue beetle could fight a yellow/red/orange lantern to show power scaling, to prep audience and Jaime for Green Lantern meets/fights Blue Beetle, and maybe Jaime learns a different/stealthy approach to take down a more powerful opponent.

I appreciate FilmSpeak’s commitment to liking things and we really need that kind of positivity but this movie was bad. A dumb fun ride. Not good. The middle schoolers in the theatre thought it was great though so I can’t complain too much

I'm confused that the character including Jaime are living in the DCU but the film means nothing, so Is this DC version of black widow. Natasha family introduced are continuing on in the multiverse saga but the film and Natasha is worthless since the film released after Avengers Endgame.

I had mixed feelings about this movie. It had strong characters but was a messy mix between very dark violence and cartoonish ridiculousnes. The tone and conveniences were all over the place. Other comic book movies have balanced these elements better. I think it might have been better served as a 6+ episode show. I really liked The Flash, too, even with the wonky CGI. Michael Keaton is my favorite Batman ❤

Even when a movie is competently made. It is getting lost in the current cultural zeitgeist. Over saturation of average big budget movies are not going to put butts in seats.

I saw it last night. I think it was about a C+. I liked the main character and knew ____ was going to die from the foreshadowing. I think that the DCU has the same problem as the MCU - they exist in the same world so get them to unite. BB should have not put his family in danger, I just don't buy it. I don't need the elderly with a machine gun and a reference to the backstory... that will never be a movie or show. I enjoyed BB in the Justice League International comics because he was interacting with Batman and Booster Gold. I hope that they get there with this version of BB.

The family annoyed me. I feel like the movie had lazy writing the family’s lack of common sense in most of the movie causes a majority of the issues and is used to drive the plot forward. I will say the grandma was the most competent one of them and overall it wasn’t an awful movie. However as a long time blue beetle fan I couldn’t help but be disappointed.

I know that you love the Flash. I love Spifder-man. But I can freely admit that the 3rd Raimi movie was a mess and so was the 2nd Amazing Spider-man . The Flash was a serious mess. They tried , but failed. Blue Beetle was better, but the message and mood was all over the place. Why, exactly , was the family making small penis jokes while Jaime was being apparently torn apart in front of them? Why was grandma, fresh from watching one son die, and on her way to possibly find her grandson tortured to death, smiling so very widely ?( Obviously whoever wrote her part has never been around someone who has just lost a child. Suddenly. Even an adult one.) Hell, Jaime's uncle barely seems to acknowledge that his brother just died. None of them do, beyond one scene. Why was Jaime so very against killing, and we are to take that as a good thing, but, meanwhile , here we have grandma , again, laughing her ass off as she guns people down with glee? Why is the mood of this movie all over the place in tone? Then there are just the things that don't make much sense on their own. How , exactly , did Jaime's uncle , an unemployed person , with no noted technical training, defeat the KORD company security with ease, and also decode the Blue Beetle tech nearly effortlessly? Why were we to believe that Victoria was passed over " because of her sex" when we are clearly shown that she is a lunatic and was not at all right to lead a company? We are to believe that the KORD company is a racist organization, who gives no respect to latino characters, but the top scientist in the R and D department is Latino, as is the CEO's right hand man. To the point that the receptionist, in a large population Latino city, cannot properly pronounce Jaime's name, even after being corrected, and she assumes that he is a delivery boy. In a suit????? Why was Jaime so against killing Victoria, but was perfectly okay with Carapax killing her? Didn't even try to talk him out of it for a second. This movie was okay, but all over the place in so many ways. To me, it mostly gets by on the charisma of its cast( particularly Xolo Mariduena. The kids got acting chops) and not on its writing or filming.
