I am pretty sure there is a lore reason they attack the trees. No, seriously. The trees are Giant Trees, and the soldiers fought the Giants, so maybe the Hollowing has made them think the Trees are actual Giants.
@mist8513
6 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure this is the case too, though the game botches this in the most awkward way. If it was meant to be evocative that they were attacking the trees, they should have had the enemies spawn directly next to the trees and refuse to strike anything but them (a lone hollow does this in Dark Souls 3 by striking a wall and shaking his head)
@michaeljaradeh6213

bob bobert there are actually 2 hollow soldiers that spawn near that exact tree, and they attack it endlessly, until you aggro them, but I've never seen the hallway soldiers run all the over to it. They probably wanted to make opening chest better by making the animation longer to create more anticipation, like zeldas do. It's not a bad thing on itself, except for the fact that several times in the game you find 3 or more chests in the same room. Opening them becomes a chore instead of a reward, specially when some of them contain just some random consumable. To be fair, DS1 did that too in archives and in havel's room, but there were actually reasons for it. In archives, one of the chests was a mimic, and in havel's room i'm pretty sure the point was to convey how massive havel's set is, that it doesn't fit in 1 chest (and there was also a mimic). Admittedly, DS2 sometimes tries to slip a mimic surrounded by chests too, but most of the time, it just looks like they wanted to waist your time instead of putting a corpse with the item on it.
@FirstLast-yc9lq

I have replayed all 3 games recently and there is something very uncomfortable i've found during that time. DS1 is very slow but you're just as slow as the enemies, in DS3 you're pretty fast but so are the enemies too. There's consistency in speeds and reaction times for both of you. In DS2 however, I felt something was off. My attacks and some enemy attacks can come out really fast, but the speed of the game is completely botched by other, unnaturally slow animations. This is especially true for enemies. They tend to have ridiculously long recovery animations which, tied with DS2's habit to have a fuck ton of enemies doing a 3 part combo, makes it really boring to look at. They will also have huge windows of doing absolutely nothing and looking at you before doing a fast attack that contradicts such a long wait time. The player is also plagued by this inconsistent speed. You can swing your weapons very fast, yet you will chug estus at the speed of a snail. You can spam roll almost as fast as DS3 but if you try to roll after attacking you will be locked by long recovery frames before you can actually start doing it. This is not a problem in DS1 because everything is equally slow as fuck, and it's not a problem in 3 because you can skip the recovery frames, you can roll as soon as your attack landed. Overall DS2 displays a lack of consistency in its speed, which tends to make everyone look as fast puppets locked behind a one time action before needing to reload a gigantic battery.

@DustyDodongo

the game has a lot of problems but I find the movement to be the worst one. The horrible dead zones and the wonky animations for everything is just a direct downgrade from DS1. Worst thing by far is the roll; in DS1, DS3 and BB the roll/dodge will always keep you faced towards the locked-on enemy. There is a different roll animation depending on if you roll left, right, forwards or back. The attack directly after rolling will always be towards the target. In DS2, there is only 1 roll animation and it's directly forward, so if your attack is timed to come out the moment the roll ends your character will not have enough time to rotate and correct itself towards the enemy before the attack plays out (as seen at 1:03:24). On top of that they decided to only allow about 20° of freedom to pivot most attacks. All that does is take away player control and make everything feel way more stiff. Also I'm sure someone has told you already but the manual aiming of large weapons like great hammers and ultra greatswords using the left stick is actually a feature, not a bug. I agree it takes the whole point of locking-on away but someone developing the game decided that was a good idea. It is even included in DS3 as a lock-on option. I've only known 1 person who actually preferred it, he said it was useful for PVP.

Dark Souls 2 is my favorite simply because it's where I started in the series. However, the stark majority of your criticism is entirely warranted, it is a game with serious flaws. In fact the only thing I even minorly disagreed with was lock on with an ultra greatsword. Being able to aim where your character swings with the left stick is a designed feature, not a bug (for better or worse, though I personally prefer it). Otherwise, playing Dark Souls 2 in my opinion, is about taking all the bull in stride, and still being able to overcome it. That doesn't mean it's not a shit show, it absolutely is. This stuff makes me so sad too. I have times where I get this urge to play dks2 and do. It’s got such a cool and unique atmosphere, and I have to admit that I like the pacing of combat more than 1&3. Feels like every move is much more important and that you need to think about every move that much more. Then I play the game and I’m loving it! It’s so good and so much fun that I immediately love the part of me that wanted to give it another chance! … then I get past the Forrest of the Galen giants and just immediately remember why I hate the game so much. Really feels like they spent all their time on that level and everything else is horribly rushed. Every aspect of the controller, level design, enemy design, etc feels like it was designed NOT to be fun or intuitive, but to be as disruptive and annoying as possible. It’s just soul crushing to think of how good this game could have been if they prioritized making the game more playable than prioritizing an arbitrary boss and level count…

Actually, the hitboxes in this game are pretty big, take The Fume Knight for example, you can perfectly land a great dodge and still be hit by his blade. Or blocking on time with a good shield, it can still do a good chunk of damage. Brings us back to hitboxes, even with good positioning, some enemies wield weapons with an unreasonably large hitbox, and you can still get hit.

@@Yem1010 Why should I have to install mods to make the game work as intended "More often", isn't this the same problem everyone had with DSfix, it was a garbage solution to sheer incompetence of the games release back then too and the fact that they left the game to rot like that for 7 years before charging 20 dollars for an upgrade to a PROPER PC port is absolutely abhorrent and it was rightfully called out for it by the community. None of these games have ever been exempt from criticism, Dark Souls 2 had a responsibility to be BETTER than its predecessor, not worse. Just because it shares many of the same blemishes as its progenitor does not magically make them "Okay". And while the later titles do have their share of shortcomings the redeeming qualities outweigh the detrimental ones which is more than what can be said for DS2 which the scale is far more tipped in favor of its flaws than its benefits.
@MrSchnorkel

Just a heads-up to put at the beginning of my comment: The original version of Dark Souls 2 was patched to run with 60 frames per second at 1080p. Those who prefer that version to Scholar of the first Sin are no longer shut out from the technical upgrades to the director's cut. At 21:40 the hitbox of the falchion tracks correctly. The player character does a 360° turn, spinning the falchion around with him. It happens very quickly, but if you set the video playback to quarter speed you can catch the moment when the enemy takes damage just as the sword touches him. Something a bit different happens at 21:53 with the rat in front obscuring the second rat's really long tail which was most likely hit by the player character's attack. This, of course, doesn't take away from the bigger point of bad hitboxes with all the damning footage at hand. 1:13:25 Being staggered by a headshot opens you up to a riposte; it's the same animation as being guard-broken. This was most likely added for PVP fights. The bottomless poison pit at 1:14:45 was even worse in the original version of DS2 since a crystal lizard would escape into it. If you killed the lizard as tumble over the edge, the item drop would be lost to you forever. At least they moved the lizard elsewhere in SotfS. What wasn't mentioned in this critique were the problems that the soul memory system brings. The metric which pairs players for PVP invasions/summons counts all of the souls the players ever gained, not the character levels the players have reached. This means that players who want to try out PVP after beating the game for the first time will be matched with others who have much higher levels since the newer player lost way more souls over the course of the playthrough than the veteran min-maxer. The thing I hate most about DS2 is how it stealth nerfs the player's item discovery. That statistic isn't even shown in the stats screen. I reckon that is specifically so the game can nerf it behind the player's back while no one can see it. After all, it can be explained away by just saying you got unlucky even though you suddenly get way less item drops after farming for about 30 minutes in one area. This problem is compounded by the enemies stopping to respawn after getting killed 12 times. It's very strange, but many of the issues with DS2 weren't apparent to me until I watched this video series. Maybe I just got used to the strange ways the game works. Thanks for these videos, Mauler.
@JuneTheBard

Well, thanks Mauler for the wealth of free entertainment. I'd like to say though, that while I disagree with some things like the criticism of the lock-on system, as I could explain exactly what happened in all the mentioned clips and what could have been done to prevent them, concerning two criticisms that I agree on, I would say I agree with you *more than you agree with yourself*: For the backstab complaint and the 'hidden information' complaint regarding ADP. For the backstab complaint, you did not touch on parrying at all. Well, you did, in regards to it's wonkiness when trying to riposte, but I'm talking about something else. About how seemingly random it is. For someone who initially fell in love with parrying, I became bitter to it real fast when you realize that there are an AWFUL LOT of enemies and weapons that just randomly and with no telegraphing cannot be parried at all, or they can when they really shouldn't be, or they CAN be parried but winds up being pointless anyway. For example: the archdrake knights in Shrine of Amana, they singlehandedly epitomize my complaint. They have hugely telegraphed and predictable attacks, use a weapon that is parryable, have every reason to be parryable... but they cannot be parried, at all, in any circumstance, which is incredibly frustrating. There are other enemies, but you get my point. Another example: You might not know this Mauler, but two-handed 'great weapons' cannot be parried in PVP scenarios... now this information is never told to you, but I guess it makes intuitive sense in that there is too much force to be brushed aside, but this only applies to the normal R1 and R2 attacks, the rolling and running attacks CAN be parried, just to make it complicated. NOW, what the game doesn't tell you, when you run up against an NPC red phantom or NPC invader using a two-handed great weapon, they CAN be parried. This is such a niche thing you'd probably never encounter it, but I just abhor both hidden information and inconsistencies in that hidden information. Finally, there are bosses that you can parry! It's very cool to do, as in the Pursuer or Velstadt, as they're so stunned by you brushing off their attack they leave themselves wide open for several seconds to get free hits in. Though exactly which bosses can or cannot be parried is seemingly random, which I feel is unfair to the player that feels that they should be able to parry, but can't for seemingly no reason. Though there are bosses like the Ruin Sentinels, which you CAN parry... but they literally don't care, they don't stunned by it, and in fact recover instantly. It's so bad that it would be been better to just have dodged their attack and attacked them during their cooldown, rather than parry them. For the 'hidden information' complaint regarding ADP, you forgot that this applies to equipable items as well! That is, there are certain equip-able items that have auxiliary bonuses attached to them, which for the most part are obvious as they're written in the description. However, there are a wealth of items that have auxiliary effects, but no hint in their description as to exactly what they are! The most egregious examples are the various crowns you get for beating the DLC areas. Looking at them and their descriptions, you might think they are simply vanity items for beating the tough areas, and you would be wrong! Each crown has it's own unique effect, like Vendrick's "King's Crown" increases Faith and Intelligence, or the "Old Iron King Crown" regenerates spell uses over time, or the "Ivory King Crown" that regens HP. But more than any of that, once you get all of them, you can take them back to Vendrick in the Ashen Mist Dream (though the game never tells you to do this) and he'll power them up... though he actually doesn't tell you what he's doing, you just have to FIGURE OUT that now by wearing the crowns you become totally immune to hollowing out when dying, and by cursing entirely. That is just the biggest example, but there are tons of items that have similar hidden effects. Actually, I would say that the "Hidden Information" complaint is honestly my biggest gripe about the game, as there is SO MUCH about the game that is never explicitly told that winds up being very vital information, along with Soul Memory (which is mentioned by other commenters here) as being the things that ruin a great deal of my experience with the game. Actually, one more thing I wanted to mention, in that you complained about upgrade materials being very common and therefore cheapening the meaningfulness of building your character up... I thought it would have occurred to you how stupid the upgrade system is in the first place. Like, it doesn't need to be there, at all, and the developers realized this and so attempted to circumvent it by giving you tons of upgrade materials. It honestly would have just been flat-out better if they removed the upgrade system and just gave every weapon it's maximum stats to start, so players in the mid-to-late game could experiment more easily with the new weapons they get and alter their builds on the fly to fit the challenge and situation, rather than possibly getting locked into a certain playstyle because they didn't have the prescience to know to upgrade a weapon they never could have known they would ever need or want in the first place. Following that, the entire game could then be easily rebalanced with this information in mind, with the only loss being I suppose an artificial sense of character progression. I would say this extends to the leveling system as well. In that you complained that the game gave you too many levels, when I would argue that the leveling system is superfluous and actually could be thrown out, though now I'm playing armchair game developer and trying to re-imagine the game as something else entirely, rather than criticize what is there in existence. But I will say that having the plethora of levels and the ability to respec means players are again not locked into a single playstyle that they initially build themselves into, as it may be a bad or unfun playstayle, and as they learn more they can better visualize what they actually want and level towards that with their plethora of levels, or use the soul vessels to respec to that rather than have to start over and potentially slog through 50-100 hours of gameplay again just in order to play the game in a different way. It makes it more forgiving and fair to the new player, which I feel is a great addition, which DS3 kept in for good reason.

Yeah, have to say there is a lot of interesting ideas there and it looks like people all over the world pick a different topic to be the most frustrated about with the game itself. The enemy AI is broken because all enemies have special scripts made to ambush you. If you come at them in any other way other than what the developers intended they break. This becomes extremely obvious if you're farming Twinkling Titanite in Shrine of Amana starting from Rhoy's Resting Place. I also hate how ds2 and even 1 sometimes used the "Y axis turned" enemies. So basically if you try to circle an enemy to find an opening, most of the time they'll have some sort of side/back attack to cover their flanks. That's perfectly fine. But in Dark Souls 2, there are many cases that the enemy just rotates in one place to face you constantly without any animations and hits you with its forward-facing attacks. The salamander pit section is a prime example of this. Instead of actually giving animations to the enemies to be able to hit you from the side, they just rotate along you to face you constantly. Feels extremely cheap.

Dark Souls 2 is a fun game, hell I'd even say it's an above average, very good game. It's got a buttload of content, above average ARPG gameplay(I'd give it a six, which is more than I'd give to ff15, or even TW3, even if that game is a masterpiece in it's own way.) and at least has a decent foundation for lore that makes it more than pure generic mediocrity. It's got decent music and while not a pretty game when it came out, was far from bad looking. Dark Souls 2's problem is it's part of a series that is full of bare minimum fantastic games to masterpieces. It's the big fish in a small pond, but only to realize that there are sharks in the ocean it just entered. It's just worse than it's brothers, it feels more like a decently made soulslike game than something made from the original developers, whether it be lore or gameplay. It lacks the polish, the atmosphere, the memorable characters, the ridiculous amounts of detail in the environment and the snappy, responsive gameplay. It's good, it's just not great, and great is the minimum in a souls game before it. One could say it's First Sin was it's very name, as it would be called fun and good soulslike if it were in it's own fantasy verse(which it could honestly get away with by changing some names of spells.). It wouldn't be seen as great like the others, but it wouldn't be as scrutinized as it was.

When I first watched the video, I pointed out one mistake. On backstabs, he shows himself trying and failing to backstab Jester Thomas. Now, the jester is wearing the jester set, in which every piece has a special effect. The torso makes you immune to critical attacks, including backstabs. That's *one* case where he criticizes the game for him not knowing the game well enough. Aside from that, while the way weapons some weapons track is annoying (and most weapons have problems in my experience), weapons like Ultra Greatswords are working as intended when they attack in the direction you are moving your analogue stick. It sucks for people who are unaware playing PvE, but apparently that was a decision that was appreciated and even wanted by PvPers. That's two cases that can be defended (jester armor working as intended and controlling big weapon swings independently of targeting, which I've personally never liked) , but I concur, more than 90% of the criticism is entirely appropriate. And to be clear: I don't even like the things that can be defended. Would rather they weren't a thing.

The constant comedic energy of AI, the bizarre and sometimes downright comedic combat scenarios, the "Bosses' (Looking at you, Prowling magus), it all comes down to an expirence that, if you want to approach just like DS1, it is janky and annoying, but on it's own merits, it's so much fun. I would eliminate Elden Ring from that list. Elden Ring has MANY of the problems listed in this video, including new ones that are arguably worse. It’s easy to ignore such problems because Elden ring is supposed to be a good game, and ds2 is supposeded to be the one mediocre or bad From game, . . . But in my very extensive Elden ring experience its input coding, hitboxes, and new things like aim punch and etc are as terrible or at times even WORSE than the issues of ds2. In fairness to DS2 (not that this remotely helps it’s case as a whole), at 1:06:45 , the reason for a lack of backstabs is because Jester Thomas’ set prevents you from getting critical attacks from behind. Not that the average player would know, given the set is sold by Magerold in Iron Keep and most people hardly talk to the guy if ever, from what I’ve heard. ..That said, every other clip there was a hilarious showcase of this game’s horrifically inadequate backstab system. Bonus: at 37:00, the hollows attacking the tree isn’t a bug or pathing issue, rather, that’s a tree that was formerly a giant, which those hollow soldiers fought. DS2’s best attempt at environmental storytelling I suppose. Though the prioritization of attacking the tree over the player is a.. different matter. Other than these two minor oversights the video is an excellent critique, and puts into words many of my own scattered thoughts-and issues, regarding this game. I know I’m ages late to the party on this video, but I’m glad to have seen this series.

That 8 directional movement is something I noticed immediately, it feels like something a mad employee would tweak in after they got pissed off. It drove me so crazy I couldn't even play the game after a few hours.

The point with ADP is especially frustrating since I played DS2 directly after DS1 and in DS1 everybody told me not to put points in resistance as it's some kind of joke from the developers so I thought "Oh it will be the same with ADP I guess" and then I wondered the whole game why enemy swings always hit me even when I thought I rolled away early enough.

@@humbelgeniustv5594 I did. Deleted the game again but after some perseverance I decided to make a brand new character and start from scratch. The game honestly isn’t that bad it’s just some of the choices they made were pretty stupid. The whole thing with ADP was so stupid. Nothing about the skill tells you what it does so some of us went through the whole game thinking our rolls were unfair because we didn’t have a single point. But also the fact that certain bosses are extremely easy when your rolls throughout the game are constantly getting better and better. They didn’t think that ADP would have to work around the game and each boss specifically in order for there to be balance

The AI pathfinding problems are more to do with nodes. The reason the square in Shulva is inaccessible to the enemies is because at some point that square can become a pit for an elevator. Instead of putting nodes over the gap when it's closed and removing them when it's open, they didn't put nodes at all, out of convenience of development I guess, which means enemies literally can not walk onto there. A lack of nodes basically explains most examples of "bad AI" like the gargoyle not jumping- it doesn't jump because there are not any nodes for it to jump to. The connections between nodes is also hilariously bad in this game. More than once have I seen a group of enemies take the same zigzag path through an empty room- they all followed nodes laid out in an inexplicably bizarre fashion.

LSDO the funny thing is that I tested it and he went for me. Idk how programming as I only know how to do 3D models but maybe they have put some specific path finding on it so that he need to get on a specific placement for being able to advance? He did took a lot of time turning around me but he did eventually attack. Have you an idea on what it could be?
@LSDOvideos
5 жыл бұрын
@@raphicoco there's explanations I can think of, but none of them can really be confirmed. I'm guessing either that there is a "leash" these enemies can break our from that will eventually allow them to take unorthodox routes. You said the enemy attacked you so it could be that the attack animation itself pushed him over the edge, so to speak. Can't really confirm it without footage though.

Is that why enemies try to attack you through walls and sometimes succeed? Since the nodes they have might not account for the environmental obstructions?
@LSDOvideos

@@tytsty5716I think that has more to do with how the game handles player detection for enemies. If they succeed in hitting you thats just a hitbox issue.
@raphicoco

@@tytsty5716 I did test out how and when they do it and realized that they don't attack you wen you are behind a wall. Wen they do, it is because they have already started there attack animations way before you got behind it. It is a consistent problem in every single souls games. But I guess they cant just make there attack animation stop or bounce it off the walls as it would have been extremely exploitable.

@@brocolyrics4331 the only thing you're missing is Power Within and eventually the iaito, both of which can be grabbed in a single suicide run before leaving the area for the Valley. Also at that point you normally don't have access to poison-resistant gear (the only aviable is Dusk's set but then you have no poise, and the poison-bite ring costs so much no normal player have it at this point. I generally go through the area for power within because that spell is absolutly OP in NG, but if somehow I don't need the spell I clearly don't bother doing blighttown, and even skip gaping dragon as well.

To be fair, I'd love for him to go *into* Dark Souls 1 with the same intent to pick it apart and see what he comes out with (bonus points if he plays through the *original* PC port without fan fixes, so he can see what PC players had to deal with *before* they came into Dark 2.)
