No. Even the more sophisticated stair-step upspeak is annoying. It's called floor holding. It's a manipulative technique to stop people from interrupting you. It's used by narcissists and other people who want to dominate the airwaves. I can't stand people who do that.

This video has changed my mind. I thought that upspeak was the thing that i hated the most. Now is this guy and upspeak is a closed second followed by the fry voice thing.

His examples of stair-step upspeak do not sound like a change in pitch. It just sounds like he is irritated and angry by providing emphasis and punch on the last syllable but their is no change in pitch. As a professional musician, I find his liking music criticism to upspeak as deeply flawed. I would definitely criticize a musician who ended all of his runs and licks an octave higher during its final measure with no discernible purpose.

Tone and pitch are an intregal parts of communication and conveying one's ideas to another. To use music, playing a passage quickly suggests something lively, active, and dramatic...one would not think of a midday nap listening to Flight of the Bumblebee or Bugler's Holiday. Finishing statements with upspeak suggests something interrogatory or uncertain. That is true in today's american english language.

Language does change over time but for the sake of being taken more seriously in today's professional US world, make a conscious effort to eliminate upspeak from your communication. Otherwise, you will sound insecure and will have a more difficult time being taken seriously.

Nice explanation. It’s the slide up speak that i hear most often and has the negative impact and perception. I believe people are not paying attention to their delivery and on auto pilot as it will be use repeatedly in a conversation or presentation. I would not even include stair step in the same category.. Your actual presentation here was a good example of effective speaking and clearly devoid of IT.

As someone that claims to have musical theoretical knowledge, a reminder that suspensions/dissonances resolve DOWN. (Ahh-menn) Zappa's surely a better example to follow than Moon Unit, both in speech and music. Maybe it's time to revisit some Bach Chorales...

To this day in 2022, I still find upspeak extremely annoying and makes speakers (maybe undeservedly) sound dumb. "Bimbospeak" should've been coined. But the second type of "upspeak" in this video is TBH new to me, and it sounds way better than the typical American upspeak. However, I don't believe it's upspeak at all.
@RogerLoveVocals

I agree that the second version of "upspeak" shouldn't be categorized as upspeak in the same way. But the media has. The application of melody is a communication device designed to engage your listener. Our voices communicate more than just words, don't they?
@robovirtuoso1354

@@RogerLoveVocals I like that. Maybe it can be called "melodic speech" instead. "Upspeak" is just rather cringeworthy.

I think what bothers me the most about upspeak is jealousy. I was forced to take speech lessons because of a lisp and a British accent as a child. I don't know what effect losing that part of my speech has had on my life, but most people can't tell where I'm from any more.

Muffuggah's a genius. This is exactly like advocating for fat pride. You tell people with a disability, a disadvantage that they should feel good about themselves and you make millions! It's glorious! The only morons dumb enough to fall for this scam are the idiots who can't help speaking in uptalk because they lack any confidence and resolution in themselves. Uptalk is explicitly derived from low self-esteem, self-conscious, over-sensitive special snowflakes who constantly seek validation to support their existence. These are not people companies would trust to make convincing arguments, make decisions, or lead others. These are children still vying for attention and affection as their priorities. When you switch your priorities from personally selfish desires to firm and concise priorities beyond yourself with efficiency and productivity in mind, you will naturally stop uptalking. I will never hire people who uptalk because I just don't have the time to be a babysitter.

Thank you very much for this video. I was recently criticized by one of my direct reports for using upspeak in my team meetings. I also believe there is value in using upspeak - I think the Bloomberg article mentions that it can help with concensus building. I believe I use the step upspeak, but one thing to consider is that the negative connotation may still be perceived with more feminine voices.

Wow! I'm shocked at this guy's limitations. First of all his stairstep upspeak examples actually have a drop in pitch at the end - listen to the examples, (7:03) "late" has a drop in pitch "hungry" and "way" are super obviously increased in pitch at the beginning of the word and dropped at the end. So no such thing exists, and he must not have good hearing. Secondly, is this guy a voice coach? I am, and I mean OK, maybe some people don't want to upspeak because they don't want to sound like they are young... but the real problem with upspeak is that it sounds like you never conclude your thoughts. It makes listeners anxious, and makes you sound uncertain. And, besides all that I really don't like his style of speaking..... Crazy!

You're a voice coach? 😳 You look like you are trying to make people think you're something you're not. A degree in music should put you in the arena of giving vocal singing instruction. I'm sure you're great at it. You do have a strong voice. But speaking in terms of business, self respect and maturity, the upspeak has no place but in the trash can. Bottom line is, they sound like airheads, and people don't like it. End of story.
