This is what KZitem is for! I love hearing the narrative behind the chords and melody. Awesome job and keep them coming!!

Thank you so much! I have similar videos in production! These analysis videos take me a long time to make (more studying/editing necessary than other videos), but I do love making them!

Excellent analysis! The animations on scores are super helpful and timed very well so that we always know what you're talking about, but some type of scanning time bar might help people follow along with the score when you're playing musical examples. I also think you touched briefly on an interesting subject that might be worth reading into, about how musical scores (especially from this era) have to be composed in a way that they can loop endlessly but still make musical sense. From a practical standpoint, the ending of Aerith's Theme had to be structured in a way that led logically into the beginning of the theme, but it served a dual purpose of representing Aerith's story as never-ending as she became a part of the endlessness of the life stream. The duality of theme is its purpose as a poetic representation of Aerith's story arc but also as a product of the practical limitations of the technology. I wonder what other video game themes serve this dual purpose and how much the limitations of the technology played a role in forcing the creativity of the composers.

Awesome points! I'll definitely look into a time bar for the next one, or at least highlighting measures as they occur. And yes, I've read about a few composers talking about the technological limitations they faced and how they reacted. I'd love to pick composers from that era's brains about that one day!

Nobuo is a genius and your analysis match my feelings toward this theme. Thanks. It's all contradictions, dialectics, from beginning til the end. And the music in this game keep making adult men who played this game, cries... like a baby... What an achievement. What an achievement.

Super interesting, thanks for that video. What do you make of the E in the D major chord? Just an added 9th or is there something more to it?

Thanks for watching! Could have something to do with it going down an octave in the following chord... kinda mirrors that ascent/descent of the melody.

I think it is modulating to Aeolian but resolving in Major, can some one confirm please?

So you're thinking it heads to D Aeolian when the B flats and F naturals come in? I suppose you could consider it a temporary modulation that way! Just very brief. Unless I'm misunderstanding you!
@angeloop

@@tiramanivgm7350 That's what I think. The first part is almost an Aeolian mode except for the grade I. I'm just learning about modal interchange, that's why im asking, i think the first chords D Am Bb Gm D are pretty interesting and unusual.

I noticed that uematsu tends to borrow a lot from the relative minors. To me also makes sense that these chords not from d major are borrowed from d minor.

One interesting thing he does also in the main theme is to start with e major, use chords from e minor and also almost like using chords from both the g minor and major scale. But I would have to check this info again.

I enjoyed the analysis a lot! Aerith’s theme is one of my favorites (top 5!). However the character analysis here is a bit off. She wasn’t “Cloud’s rock:” That role was given to Tifa and that’s very visible in the story and music as well. Tifa is the one who grounds him and helps him find his true self. Aerith never knew the real Cloud but rather was chasing after her first love, Zack, for the majority of her time with Cloud. Aerith was a companion Cloud deeply cared about and his guilt over not being able to protect her is what what affects him later, not a desire to “be with her in the afterlife.” He was chasing after forgiveness and he was able to achieve it by the end of Advent Children and move on with his family (what the devs called his true Promised Land). This characterization of Aerith is often misinterpreted. Uematsu said Aerith’s theme was written in in his mind with the idea of her waiting at the train station for someone who doesn’t come. It lends such a tragic and incomplete feeling to her theme as you can feel her waiting for her beloved who never made it back to her from his mission in Nibelheim. 💔

Interesting! Personally, during my playthroughs of the original game (made this video before Remake), I always felt that even though Tifa may have been the one to actually ground him more, he looked towards Aerith as the one filling that role, whether she was or not. But I can see what you’re saying.
