It will be a lot of work, but you should do a full frame off restoration. That way you can find and repair any hidden rust or damage. A repainted frame? Goes without saying. Carefully remove all the old paint, rust and so forth, and repaint it shiny black. In those days we would only use many coats of hand rubbed lacquer. Of course, these days, that's impossible to do, due to OSHA restrictions, but I'm sure there should be an acceptable substitute. Do it right without half measures or shortcuts. In the end, you will have a daily driver which is also an award winning show car that you can pass along to your sons and grandsons. I will be watching with great interest as you complete the project. It sure makes this antique hot rodder's heart beat with joy to see it.

Great video and interview with Jack D. What an awesome history and a legit Woodward Ave street racer. I know you typically like the “perfectly shitty” look on these old cars but this needs to be painted. When Jack had the car it would have had a street worthy (not custom) paint job and not all that rust. My vote is you repaint the entire car to bring back the spirit of the car as it was in its glory days.

Re the bakelite knob, it's really common for them to discolor with age, especially with exposure to UV etc. It likely started life as off-white, just as jack remembered it. Regarding the "original" motor, I wouldn't be surprised if it had an engine swap shortly before it ended up on the car lot Jack bought it from. The single-carb and overheating issues Jack mentioned were likely the result of a quick pre-sale swap. I'd do a bunch of measurements on the various mount locations to work out what it may have been running before Jack had it. Great show, Matt! You're incredibly lucky to find that amazing car!

That fuel pump. I have a theory I think you'll like. Loving this by the way. Jack is sharp as a knife. Trust me I know I care for my father who has dementia full time now. Try remembering every detail about your first car! and then add 40 years and then speak as clearly as Jack about that car. What I was going to say about the fuel pump or more its knob. I wouldn't mind betting that knob was white once. I've seen those early materials take on the colour of rust before. In one of my former lives I use to work on antique and vintage cars as a coachbuilder and mechanic. Those plastics can become porous. If it was laying in damp rusty conditions I wouldn't mind betting that's what happened. It has leeched the rusty water into the resin. Sometimes you can polish that out a fair bit although that one is a wee bit extreme. As for the restoration it's only original once. There has to be limits unless you're a museum though. You have the skills so I'd say get it back to its 1950s glory. Beautiful find. Normally I end "be lucky" but you already were multiple times on this one!
