In Derry Vale, beside the singing river, So oft I strayed - ah, many years ago - And culled at morn the golden daffodillies That came with spring to set the world aglow. O Derry Vale, my thoughts are ever turning To your broad stream and fairy-circled lea. For your green isles my exiled heart is yearning, So far away across the sea. In Derry Vale, amid the Foyle's dark waters, The salmon leap above the surging weir. The sea-birds call - I still can hear them calling In night's long dreams of those so dear. O hurrying years, fly faster, ever faster, I long to see the vale beloved so well; I long to know that I am not forgotten And there at home in peace to dwell.

Dear Maureen Hegarty: I have just spent a week of sunshine, music, song and dance in Derry for the first of two visits of the Pan Celtic Festival and I love your song and your splendid photographs. It was the first time I have ever been in your lovely city. I have left it a bit late - I was born in Cork in 1938 - but I am glad indeed that I have left the very best wine till last. I plan to come again during Easter Week 2015 during the next Pan Celtic Festival. Up Derry every time!

I sat with my 85 year old father last night. He told me a long and meandering tale. During WW2 a guy serving with him in Burma would recite the words of a poem beginning "In Derry Vale, beside the singing river". Years later, my dad wove the first three lines into the opening of a Burns Supper address ("Auld Scotia"). As we sat last night he dug out his "Auld Scotia" script and asked me if I could find out about this poem. He will be knocked over by this song. Thank you Maureenderry

I sang this song, with this same letter, In derry vale, in an English college in Rosario, Santa Fe province, in Argentina, in the sixties. I've found the same music but with other letter, Oh Danny boy, in Internet. I'm glad to hear afain this beautiful song with the same letter I learned al school.

Thank you so much for telling me this. It makes me happy when a song I sing connects with someones memories. I learned this song when I was at primary school quite a few years ago. Most people know the words of Danny Boy to this air. My fond regards to your father. Maureen

On flute, my Dublin flute teacher introduced a tune for me to play which I at once recognized, The Derry Air, and my flute then sang it. O'Muirgheasain of Finn Valley to Clonmany Parish, Inishowen, Donegal.

Many thanks for your reply .It is a little bit sad to think of all those talanted musicians not playing any more .I myself was part of a junior orchestra many years ago and although i left it in 1974 i still keep playing ,although many or a lot of my former players have alas given it up.Music can be a great way to express oneself or just for sheer pleasure.

Never heard these words ,so gorgeous.and your interpretation much different which is lovely!at school i learned different words to the melody Slane long before i knew Be thou my vision or the irish folk song "when first to this country..." Our words were" when i am a roving alone in the hills/ my heart is so joyful it suddenly fills / with longing to sing of the beauty i see/ i pity the townsfolk who are never so free,"

We also sang this, in the 1960s, in elementary school in Dallas, Texas. My family is Irish on both sides, and it really comes out when I sing. I hope it''s peaceful, now, as the song implies.

Maureen, this is absolutely lovely. I prefer Rothery's lyrics by a wide margin, as do you I suspect. I’ve recently made my own version with new accompaniment, an extra middle verse, and new lyrics (though Rothery’s lyrics comprise about half of it). Soon I will publish the sheet music, for solo, and for choir, both with piano. Can I send you a free copy? I’ve re-named it Beside the Foyle.
