I would like to caution the audience in the West regarding this particular political scientist. Ekaterina is very adaptable in her views depending on the place of employment. During her tenure in Russia, she fed her audience with promises of “generational change”, promoted voting even though the electoral system is rigged and made vague promises of the brighter future. Still, she was quick to dismiss those who would see mounting repressions: when the war finally started, she was quick to say that: “city fools turned out to be right” without gracefully acknowledging mistakes on her part of dismissing reports of several intelligence services and other warning signs. Currently, she works in Kazakhstan after being awarded professorship here, and continues her regular speeches regarding gradual democratization even in the aftermath of the Kazakh government inviting Russian forces and shooting hundreds of civilians in the major cities during January 2022 riots. She doubled down on “democratization” even after the presidential terms were reset, and following parliamentary elections were rigged: she then famously quoted Stalinist excuse for rigging elections as “перегибы на местах” (local over-doings). She also never acknowledged attacks on journalists and torture of prisoners in Kazakhstan preceding the elections. She dismissed them as “устранение крамолы” (removal of sedition). She also had the audacity to call a referendum in Uzbekistan a sign of democratization even though it was preceded by mass riots that were put down by the army and referendum resulting in reset of presidential terms for current president. In conclusion, in my opinion, Ekaterina is crafty at soothing her audience even at the expense of their security, and those of her audience who trust her words completely will rabidly defend her most outrageous claims because she provides them with the sense of comfort especially when their world is crumbling around them.

In my opinion, there is nil of “democratization” given the context of the powers, and Ekaterina Schulmann (deliberately or not) has not named those powers that completely undermine any parliamentary independence, for instance: the power to dissolve the parliament yearly.

@@echonokShe is obligated to do this because she touched a very sensitive topic: a government shooting civilians is not a joke, and just waltzing around the fact without saying any statistics or research and pretending that things are getting better now is not a professional conduct, especially if you start a tenure in a different country which you claim to love second only to Russia. Also, it would help a lot if she didn’t use dismissive language to atrocities that happened in Kazakhstan as examples I gave in the first commentary and would mention them seriously alongside her claims of reform: instead of saying “small blood was drawn during the events but now there is democratization and many new opportunities to get elected” she could’ve said something along the lines: “After January events which saw around 250 people shot dead including several children and elderly and around 700 people tortured according to human rights watchers, the country is going through political reforms which saw many new faces entering the electoral campaign, though there would be subsequently cases of arbitrary imprisonment and lengthy sentences for some independent candidates that attempted to participate or participated in parliamentary elections”. Yes, it is more wordy, but it is more neutral, and she is a scientist who must stay neutral. Knowing how fluently she talks in Russian, she could’ve easily crammed that information at least in one of her shows. Her comments caused additional condemnation because they were made at the height of the repressions, and all she did was meeting with the members of senate and she has not met any civil activist. Lastly, I understand, that all this could’ve been her honest mistake, but she studied Kazakhstan, knows its political system and has been making those “democratization” comments for more than a year and continues to promote this “democratization” even after several cases of imprisonment of Russian opposition members in Kazakhstan, evidence of help with sanction evasion - things that she should be aware of. Her latest video where she insisted on Kazakh regime democratizing was made about two month ago, just after the cases of torture of one civil activist and one case of inhumane treatment of one journalist.
