I know that I'm late to the party, but I want to say that even native German speakers won't understand much, because many of their old songs are in dead dialects, including old German and English, and I bet that you wouldn't understand old English or French either, at least when we talk about the 12th century...

Medieval magic spells written in Old High German from in the 9th or 10th century. Phol and Wodan were riding to the woods, and the foot of Balder's foal was sprained So Sinthgunt, Sunna's sister, conjured it. and Frija, Volla's sister, conjured it. and Wodan conjured it, as well he could: Like bone-sprain, so blood-sprain, so joint-sprain: Bone to bone, blood to blood, joints to joints, so may they be glued.

The Hurdy-Gurdy or Drehleier is not a forgotten instrument mind you. I personally know a lot of peeps that know how to play it and I'm from Belgium. It uses a turning handle to turn a disc inside it that rubs against the strings while the Melodies are played on a keyboard that presses small wedges against one or more of the strings to change their pitch.

It is a, possibly over 1500 years old Germanic pagan healing prayer. Healing for horses. The horse of a Germanic god twisted its ankle and the other god healed it as if it would be „glued“. „Bone to bone - blood to blood“. The words had been transferred into Old High German in the 9th century by monks. The original wording is lost.
