The awarding of a contract for two ferries to an Inverclyde shipyard is a “scandalous state of affairs”, according to former transport secretary Derek Mackay.
Speaking to STV News in his first media interview since resigning, Mackay said a bid to build the ferries by Port Glasgow-based Ferguson Marines Limited should arguably never have been referred to ministers due to concerns over the procurement process.
Ferguson’s yard has since been nationalised to save it from administration and the Glen Sannox and the as-yet-unnamed hull 802 were originally due to be completed in 2018, but have since been delayed until at least 2023 at a cost of more than £300m - more than three times the initial contract value.
