I was hoping David Lama would become over time to be the younger Ueli Steck. It was a dream not to be. I couldn't believe the news at first. He was always one who knew when to turn around, when to call it quits. But alas, fate has other plans for him, other mountains for him to climb. Even though he was so young, he died doing what he loved, what more can you ask for. RIP David, you can now climb higher and faster than ever, without fear, without fatigue. RIP David, Jess and Hansjorg. And heartfelt condolences to the loved ones you leave behind. The mountaineer’s life is 10 times greater than the average person. It’s a series of rich and emotional struggles at the edge of human experience. The mountaineer embraces his (her) passion equally with fear and divine joy. He knows no god but of himself and of nature. He is a fierce athelte and dreamer wielding a sharp blade. When he passes, his life becomes the story of sorrow and legend. At the highest level of commitment, he stands before each monumental task in front of him with stubborn determination; and with his comrades, he thinks not of his fate, but of his boundless freedom with tears of elation. He is accepting that the mountain is neither his friend nor his enemy, and by choosing to climb it he acquiesces that on any day the mountain can take him. Such is the irony and ultimate sacrifice of our sport.

Just a few months ago I began watching videos on KZitem of alpinists climbing big mountains. I didn't know who David Lama was. When I first watched a David Lama video on KZitem I was so incredibly amazed that I soon found myself watching every single video of David Lama available on KZitem. I thought "wow, this guy is such a young and talented mountaineer". I soon discovered that he was one of the most talented climbers in the world. His videos were really inspiring to me. I never thought the life and career of such a talented and young climber would end so soon. On his videos David always looked so passionate about climbing, he always looked so calm and in control. I try to find some meaning out of this big tragedy. To me the big lesson here is to follow your dreams with passion no matter what. To do what you love and to love what you do. Always. It doesn't really matter how long you live as long as what you do in life makes you happy. It is not about how long you live but how much you enjoy what you do in life regardless of your age. Great lessons by this young and talented climber. Thank you so much David for the inspiration. May you rest in peace.

The wind icy and cuts so deep, my inner core, there is no heat. Dear God please help me, for I'm so cold, hours ago, young eager and forever bold. Now reduced to a pitiful stumbling man, reach down please and hold my hand. I'm in a place, no conquest now, I know not my journey, the why or the how. For my climbing at last has come to and end, no courage or strength, or hope to spend. Lay me down and spare the pain, find a place for my body lain. The mountain has won, I did my best, oh how I failed that ultimate test. My cairn is there for my spirit to dwell, read the inscription and read it well. "Man is mere mortal, climbing up to the gods, consider your strengths, consider the odds. For this man fell, as others have done, for many have tried, and succeeded there are none. First Uli, now David. Will it be Alex next? I've been a climber all my life, but these leading-edge projects are becoming so extreme you have to ask if they are justifiable.When you're pushing that close to the limit, it's almost inevitable that some fine day you'll run out of luck. @tullochgorum6323
2 жыл бұрын
@@listrahtes Sadly, it absolutely wasn't bad luck. It was a case of over-confidence and bad judgement. The mountain was out of condition with serious avalanche risk. There were warnings in place. Other people who were in the area have said that they felt the dangers were unjustifiable and stayed in camp. David and his party were three of the most talented alpinists on the planet. This was their first training climb as a team, and it seems that they were simply too attached to the idea of enjoying a climb together. They started their route, realised it was too dangerous, and instead of baling out they traversed onto an easier route and kept going. They were killed while descending an obvious avalanche chute after they summited. A tragic waste. It seems that in their confidence they had forgotten that big mountains are no respecters of mere human ability.
@listrahtes
2 жыл бұрын
@@tullochgorum6323 But isnt that often the case in winter ascents? Mountaneering at that level at least to me implicates that level of danger. Think about Lamas Lunaq Ri mindblowing solo ascent. Seems you know better about the conditions so I wont contest that. Maybe even for winter it was not to be recommended. Still many very experienced climbers die simply because of nature be that Steck, Buhl.... Patrick Berhault fell to his death because a snowdrift went of under his feet. I think its in general a price we need to accept going into the mountains. Still very tragic to loose these three so young.
@tullochgorum6323
2 жыл бұрын
@@listrahtes Well, I've chatted online with a guy who was in the area at the time, and he was pretty amazed that they decided to climb that day, and also that they kept on going once they had realised that their initial route was unjustifiable in the conditions. Apparently the conditions were truly terrible. Yes - winter climbing is extremely dangerous. But surely that's an argument for increased caution - not for taking egregious risks? I know a couple of people who have done major alpine winter ascents - and they will wait weeks for the right conditions. Sometimes a project will take years till the conditions come right. I think the problem here was that they'd wanted to climb as a team for some time, and this was the first time it had all come together. So they decided to take the risk and grab the opportunity. After all - they were the best of the best - so what could go wrong? As the saying goes, there are very few old, bold winter mountaineers.

Hey ! We are all different and we cannot understand everything about others action and life. I think it is amazing and incredible to look at what some gives us to look at...about skills and fearlessness...adventures and spectacular scenery. Some how it is inspirational...and challenges all to understand...that everyone has bigger potential.... that it is about doing it...belive and be fearless. However I think many of those things about climbing is to stretch the luck and the safety....way too far. Than again...it seems that someone has the gift to do such a things...and it ...as i said has many different impacts on others life and others perspectives...others beliefs...others ability to complete and fulfill dreams. Much respect for the skills, bravery and thanks for sharing. I agree....that one should live ... and blossom, instead of regret a boring life...when old. Be safe...take care.

Watching this footage, it looks like it was only a question of when something goes wrong and he dies.

A fitting tribute could also include the names of at least some of David's outstanding climbs. - Lunag Ri, Moose's Tooth, Cerro Torre, the Baatara Gorge in Lebanon, the route in Zion with Conrad Anker as his partner, his climbing competition awards, etc.

A true legend. He lived more in his short life than most people who die of old age.

People who die from doing what they love..... somehow, meaningfully makes me jealous. Most people die without even having to live. So, What a special way to move on.

This is true. Also infuriating to me when chronically/terminally sick people get told it's illegal or wrong to have medically assisted suicide. I refuse to rot away in some hospital bed and I refuse to allow anyone tell me where/how I should die, or that I should never fight my illness. My happy days of climbing, skating, horse riding dancing, being a chef(only to name a few) have long passed. I'm 47 and doubt to see 50. We all need to stop speaking about death like it's a dirty word. LIVE LIFE while you can cause when your body breaks, it sucks 😢 It's just another phase we have. I've watched this several times. It gives me peace so much.
