I love this historic footage of old Monterey. If you walk down to the beach, feel the salt spray from the waves and hear the gulls, there is a healing quality & a sense of connection with nature that continues to bring people to visit.

Thanks for posting, my great grandfather was one of Portuguese fishermen on the bay for a long time.Unfortunately later he drowned after years on that bay. I found it interesting and odd that the wharf was built by prisoners.I will say every time I come back to visit I love that fact that the wharf has sample clam chowder outside every restaurant. At the end of this there's a snap of a shot of Del Monte Beach if I miss anything it's that beach to run on.

Hi Stephanie, my grandparents (from Spain) lived on 2nd & Ocean and as kids we ran all over the place, to the beach, Dennis the Menace Park. Do you remember Qualia's Market on 8th Street and the old Oak Grove school?

I grew up on Via Descanso. There is one street named Via Cimarron, which is Spanish for "wild [ones]." It is what they called Indians. I always thought maybe it was where runaways from the Mission hung out, or something like that. Does anybody know?

@@romielnagar1062 No, if they ran away from the missions, they had to run FAR away--usually over to the Sierras, sometimes down to Indian Canyon.

Mexico, Spain and America (not to mention the pirate Bouchard) all fought for control over Monterey. Plenty of people were killed here. Your woke outrage doesn’t really work in this context, find something else to complain about.
