A squale dealer who visits the factory frequently actually told me that the 1521 series and above is manufactured completely in Switzerland and while he didn't say it clearly, he hinted that the 1545's are produced in China. Until recently, squale even had one of the watch makers working for them, who produced all the original models back in the 70's. Also, the Maggi family, who currently own squale, were their Italian distributor in their most glorious days and they were/ are close friends to the von Burens. To me, this adds to their history and makes me appreciate the brand even more.

I personally currently own a 1521 in PVD and while it isn't perfect, it still is really nice for what you pay for. I did my own research before buying a Squale and asked quite a few different Squale dealers and insiders about the "new" Squale brand and it very well points into one direction. I think that the Maggi family owns Squale right now (if someone can prove otherwise, I'd love to know!) and that they are legit. Also, I've dealt with the Italian customer service more than once (sent my watch in for repair to the Squale HQ in Milan and got it back in under a week) and I was always pleased with them. I'm definitely not saying that I know more than others do when it comes to Squale but I have first hand experience, plus I probably did more research than most other buyers would and my personal advice to anyone interested in Squale is: if you like the design, go for it! Don't worry too much about all the horror stories you read online. I've experienced quite the opposite to what you read, actually.

I love the 1521 so much that I have 3 of them. Zero issues. I have never heard the China thing before. Well, if that's true, then whoever is doing that machining in China is a total stud. Omega makes their bracelets in China, I believe. The best manufacturing and the worst manufacturing happens in China. I think that stigma will be gone eventually. No matter where Squale is made (and I seriously doubt the important stuff is done in China), the end result speaks for itself, IMO. Great review.

When I was a kid (I was born in 1955) 'Made in Japan' was a total joke. Japanese products were known for shoddy materials and poor quality. The reason to have products manufactured in Japan was cheap labor. Nikon and Canon made good cameras but they were unoriginal. Canon made copies of German Leica cameras and lenses, and Nikon made copies of German Contax cameras with knockoff Leica internals. The first Japanese cars that were imported were flimsy and tinny. With time, Japanese companies went from doing knockoffs to being huge innovators. By the mid-late 1970s, Japanese manufacture was no longer a joke and Japanese products had became among the best in the world. I'm sure the same will happen with China over time.

I completely agree with your assessment of the situation. I have just recently bought the Ocean Blast 1521 myself, and mine is definitely a keeper as well. It keeps very accurate time: When worn on my wrist it's -0.5 seconds per day, and on my watch winder it's -1 second per day. For a product of this high quality in this price range I would buy the watch even if it's entirely made in China. The iPhone is made entirely in China, and I don't think anybody has a problem buying an iPhone, even though it may cost them over thousand dollars, as is the case with the new iPhone X.

What I like about the 1521.. 1. case dimensions and design (w/o a doubt my favorite designed sports watch case. I wish more watch makers would place the crown at a recessed 4 o'clock position). 2. The color..Squale knows how to do color especially their blues. 3. The orange minute hand and the designs of the hands in general. The only other design I prefer in a tool watch is the syringe hands used by Sinn. What I upgrades I hope they had done... 1. Replace the aluminum bezel insert with a ceramic one. Aluminum ones just picks up scratches so easy. 2. Drilled lugs for easier strap changes. 3. Put it on a solid bracelet with a quick change micro adjust clasp. (Can you say glide-lock) 4. Applied indices. So in summary, my perfect dive watch would be the 1521 on a Rolex-like glide lock bracelet with applied indices, powerful Seiko-like lume, drilled lugs, lumed ceramic bezel insert, and a slightly domed Safire crystal.

You know, at the price these pieces are offered I don't care if the cases are made in China. My iPhone is made in China and I paid more for that semi-disposable POS than I did my 1521. It's comfortable, somewhat original, Swiss enough to have the writing on the dial and adds enough Bella Figura not to look out of place when me and the mrs went to Sicily for a few weeks last year.

Great choice and agree it's an awesome diver. Kind of hard to decide between the matte or high polished version. I like the more radiant blue on the high polish version. It's quite hypnotic. However, that I don't find too blingy. What does is the super high polished case.. forget the fact it may show scratches more easily than the matte version, but such a shiny case is rarely what I want in my watches.. a couple of accented edges or smaller surface areas ok, but overall, I prefer brushed (or satin) finish over polished. The matte Opaco version is what I'd go with in this particular model.

Properly Wound yes, now, in that model range, or the 60 atmos or 100 atmos, the colors are pretty limited.. something with blue and orange accents or black with orange accents. they could do better to diversify the range of options.. as it is, it's pretty much 50/50 if you find someone that has a Squale, it will be more or less the same model and color... maybe higher odds it'll be the blue dial version since it seems overwhelmingly the popular choice. somewhat luckily, Squale is not a mainstream brand that's neither familiar nor readily available to the mass consumer market who would not have knowledge to buy one... so still a unique option i doubt you will find another person owning... unless he or she is into horology and has a broader knowledge of brands

Captain Tsubasa 10 I don’t understand where you get the $500 value from? It’s a “Swiss made” watch with an ETA 2824... I dont think there are any other equivalent watches at $500. LOVE squale. And this review is so far the best! 1545 is always called a homage but do google blancpain 1545. Good news was it flipped fast and got most of my money back . So its a safe buy I feel . if you like it , buy it , but there are plenty of Seiko's and other brands that will give a little more bang per buck , at almost half the cost . The heritage hocus-pocus aside, in terms of Swiss-made automatic diver's watches, the prices are pretty alright. On paper, the specs are all as expected. If Squale outsources certain manufacturing to non-Swiss facilities for whatever reasons, while still managing to meet Swiss-made requirements and offering competitive prices, hey that's pretty good. If you like the look, why not? Personally I could care less whether it's Swiss made or not, it's more meaningful to know what kind of movements are used and how accessible servicing is. Where I live, there's a Squale AD who also services watches in-house (Gnomon Watches in Singapore). 2-year + 180-day extended warranty sounds good, shouldn't be an issue servicing ETA 2824 type movements anyway. If there's one or two things I'll knock, lack of bracelet models and stingy lume application (cmon it's a diver's watch).

My goodness, the hate for Squale is already starting to spill over into the comments here. When I first became a WUS a few years ago, I was taken aback by the venomous comments that were hurled toward Invicta, Squale, and Steinhart. To this day, I still don't really understand the vitriol towards these manufacturers. They are just consumer products, not life-essential goods. Thanks for expounding the backstory of Squale and shedding some light on the reasons for the hate. Jay Sikes is right - cases made in China. Rumor is, same for Steinhart, Chris Ward, and others. 1545: most Chinese of all, not even marketed in Europe, purely an Asia licensing agreement, it's the Gnomon 1545. 1521: less Chinese, more Swiss assembly & parts. Tiger: not much China at all, NOS cases from before the Quartz Crisis and worth picking up when they show up at a good price IF it's regulated. Hope this helps.

A guy called Craig Taele-Jones once did a 3 part video (or 3 separate videos) on Squale at his channel called The Distinguished Gentleman. And, he went into a lot of detail about Squale's wrong practices. On the other side, TGV was praising this brand. The 1521 is a very pretty watch. But why 2 Squale logos on the dial? :D Patrick likes bi-directional friction fit bezels - have you tried Vostok Amphibian?
@winderjw
7 жыл бұрын
There is a reason why there are two logos on the dial, and I think it's a really cool reason. Squale used to manufacture cases for loads of watchmakers: Blancpain, Heuer, Doxa etc. All of those watches had the Squale shark logo on their dials as a mark of quality, to say "THIS case was made by Squale". So when Squale started making their own watches, they signed it once, at the top, just like all other watches. Then they signed it again to continue the tradition of all cases made by Squale carrying the bottom logo. One logo to say that it's a Squale watch, one logo to say that it's a Squale case. I think it's really cool, anyway.

So called Parnis watches GMT models, Sub homages....for each $87 and free shipping??? If the shoe fits, wear it is an old expression and I am not one to pooh pooh some of them. The new Squale has a Sellita SW 200-1 movement made and assembled in Switzerland , nothing is made or sourced in China

I have a 1521, black dial. I didn't want a homage diver, i wanted something with short lug-to-lug distance, and i wanted something that was easy and cheap to repair (had and ditched a Seamaster 300, after researching the cost of a factory sapphyre crystal). Also it's a very original watch, without being strange (round indices is a must for me). There's almost nothing like it under 1000-1500€/$ mark, i've done my homework. The 1545 is just a blatant Rolex copy, just like any of the Steinhart's offerings. Good watches, but i don't want a copy. Seiko? They only make wall clocks now, speaking about dimensions. Maybe this Baselworld will revert the fashion of big watches, with the Oris 65 40mm and 36mm offerings, and Longines LD 36mm. But we're talking 2k €/$ watches.

I owned 1 squale 1521 and sold it after 1 year bc its a tiny bit on my wrist. I wore the watch in oceans of cabo and hawaii. The watch is made decently in china but i felt like swiss made part was a lie. For a china made watch it shouldnt cost $900 to own one. The high pricing and grey line of swiss made steered me away after 1 yr of ownership. Nothing wrong with squale for performance and looks, its just got boring overtime imo. Im now in the waitlist for a tudor blackbay 58. 👌

Swis parts this and swiss parts that. The watch industry must have a laugh when they read all the forums and comments on the internet. Every company in existence sources their parts from different suppliers...this goes for watches, cars, electronics and pretty much everything else also. The supplier may even be swiss, but they in turn could be buying the parts from a third party anywhere in the world. Does it even matter if the person pushing the button on the cnc machine, making the case, is Swiss or Japanese or Chinese...? The cases might be produced in Switzerland, China, Germany, Singapore, Malaysia...and so on, who knows. This goes for most almost all products that you have in your house or driveway. Does Rolex tell where their supplier source their parts? Even ETA probably source parts to their movements, how do we know that for example the spring or jewels are made in switzerland? Since I am myself in the manufacturing business I know that to get the right to brand a product as "swiss made" or "made in Sweden" or made in whatever...the majority of the expenses or COG / COGS (cost of goods) has to be generated in that country to specific criteria..In your application you have to specify your expenses in all parts of the manufacturing process. this is how everything gets classified as a specific "made in....." You can't just stamp "Swiss made" on anything just for marketing. You would be shut down, out of business and held to justice. This is a EU company registered in Italy (it does not matter who owns the majority of the shares) so it is guaranteed safe to say that they are as swiss as all the rest of the swiss brands. The assembly for Squale watches is with 99% certainty in Switzerland because the criteria for swiss made would otherwise be very difficult to achieve, since the labour cost is much higher than the parts. Btw H.Moser & Cie ditched the "Swiss Made" branding in some of their watches because swiss watches are more or less global watches nowadays, as are for example german cars.

People hate on them because of TGV. In all honesty they need to grow the f**k up. I own a 1521 B & it's never given me any problems & it's no better or worse than my Seiko when it comes to timekeeping either. In summary they're a fun watch at a relatively cheap price point so i don't see what all the fuss is about.

Squale, Squale, Squale, Squale, Squale...... Repeat.... ;) Switzerland has made its own real big problem by only needing 51% off the cost of the watch to be made in Switzerland, on top of the movement being built an cased in Switzerland too.... So cases & bracelets are made in the far east with many of these brands claiming to be MADE IN SWITZERLAND. Take the USA, 100% of the watch would have to be made in America to have the MADE IN USA on the dial, that's why there is only a couple companies that can claim it but they can put "hand built in America", with most pieces coming from other countries and put together in the USA. Squale, Squale, Squale Squale.... Great video guys!!

I was set to buy their GMT, which I thought was the perfect design. After of year of being told they were out of stock, the dropped it from the line-up. Probably won't look at Squale again. Not a hater, just too many other great brands to consider.
