And now for something completely different from my usual content!
In January 2024, I made what I like to call an Anglo-Saxon Pilgrimage, back home to East Anglia, to celebrate a special birthday.
I'd heard the tales of an Anglo-Saxon ghost that was said to haunt a lovely old pub called The Old Ferryboat Inn, nestled on the banks of the river Great Ouse in my native Cambridgeshire, deep within the Fens. I'd wanted to visit this place for a while so the birthday pilgrimage was the perfect excuse.
The Old Ferryboat Inn claims to be the oldest pub in England! It says that it has been serving ale since 560AD! That was before the Anglo-Saxons were Christianised. They also claim to be haunted by the ghost of a young Anglo-Saxon woman who hung herself after being rejected by the man she loved. This made it too good to pass by without a look.
