When a bridge player "wins each time" he and his partner are cheating, or they are playing amatures with too much money.

Amazing talents! My cousin Jason was a decent poker player back in the days. He could always see right through my poker face, ha-ha! :-)

They got Gavin. This is something my father-in-law always said about the groom of an upcoming or currently happening wedding, using the appropriate name, of course.

Just imagine having the opportunity to have Eric Kokish as your coach, and making sneering faces at his advice. Ah, the arrogance of youth! I don't want to sound punitive, but Gavin got what he deserved. I wish these guys both well, but you don't get to be a world champion by partying all night. You need not only great talent, but very hard work. If you're not working on your system, your opponents certainly are, and they will blow you away every time. Laziness is okay if you don't want to clean up your bedroom, but it will not serve you well at the bridge table.

They both recovered well and are already Grand Life Masters. They're both considered to be one of the best young players in the world...

This is so true. Looking back at when I was young I had no idea how lucky I was. With that said, I think part of becoming a good bridge player is maturing to understand just how much work was involved. I was 20 years old and during high school I was able to do really well with almost no effort. It’s not hard to understand how that would make a young person think everything comes easily, particularly when they were doing really well at bridge and beating top teams.

A couple of wrong statements here. You don't score imps by making 3 diamonds, you do IF the result of 3D (made or not) outscores the opps on the other table. You don't look like a couple of dummies if you finish runner up in this tournament where they made 7 clubs. It is not true that there is only a single winning line of play often, it happens, but it is very rare. There almost always is a best line of play, but that does not have to be the winning line.

Interesting Gavin was playing for Canada here - but he represented USA team 2 in the Bermuda Bowl in 2022. Here he is playing against Norway: kzitem.info/news/bejne/sWd436hucIF4eYo

why arent they always using the cheating screens? I mean why not use them if u can even in less important games.

I dont know if people got eliminated in the first 2 rounds but if yes there would be just way too many tables to set up. Often they dont have enough screens or time.

@@kevinwu2040 one of the problems with words like “better” is that we *think* we know what we mean when we use them but other people often have different criteria. I like how you point out that M:TG is a solo card game so that by the criteria of “needing a partner” where “no” is better than “yes” we can say that M:TG is better than bridge. I play both games, and enjoy both, and find them to be so dissimilar that any better/worse comparison is deeply flawed, like saying that bird watching is a better hobby than kickboxing. I have tried to teach bridge to my Magic-playing friends and they have all said that bridge is too complicated and takes too much mental effort (meaning, keeping track of the outstanding trumps and which high cards were played from a suit, stuff like that) and I have tried to teach Magic to my bridge friends and they fail to find the excitement of the game any can’t be bothered to figure out how the spells can work and interact with each other in new and surprising ways each new duel.
