There have been curfews in the Ecuadorian capital Quito since January 9th, 2024 due to the nationwide unrest. Exactly one day later I came to the country and you could feel the uncertainty among the people. Hardly any life on the streets. Schools, kindergartens, universities, most shops - all closed.
Meanwhile, March and my time in Quito are coming to an end. Although the city is full of life again, President Daniel Noboa has extended the curfew until April. It is currently forbidden to go out on the streets between midnight and 5 a.m.
In this video I'm traveling with Ximena. Together we want to climb the Pichincha volcano, which is 4,696 meters high at the top of the path. My previous altitude record was the ascent of the Barú volcano in Panama, at around 3,500 meters.
Since I had been suffering from the altitude (my room is at 2,830 meters) for the first few weeks (headache, nosebleeds, shortness of breath) I was most excited about the cable car. Because there it goes from 3,100 to 4,000 meters high and you don't have the opportunity to "escape" or stop.
