If you look closely, Compton didn’t actually fumble the grenade, he was bumped from behind by another soldier. Also, him hitting the German with the exploding grenade actually happened. Compton was a star athlete at UCLA.

I've seen other reactions where Buck Compton's competency was questioned because of the dropped grenade and jammed gun. He was hit from behind when he was about to throw the grenade. You see his ability when he hit the German soldier with a grenade in the back. A testament to his baseball catcher playing days at UCLA. He actually lost his gun on the jump and picked one up from a wounded British soldier. He hadn't had a chance to test fire the weapon so Brecourt was his first use of the weapon which ended up having a broken firing pin. All were real events.

Excellent reaction. You guys are connecting the details fairly well. Yes. There are a lot of names and faces to remember. Most people don't get this one. They miss that it was Meehan's C-47 that had the engine catch fire and then crash. The scattered drops didn't confuse the 82nd and 101st Airborne units. Both airborne divisions had been drilled with information using sand table, photographs and maps. When Winters tells all to look for landmarks, he finishes his list with "Trees." That's an inside joke because many soldiers would say they even knew what every tree in Normandy looked like because of the information and training they had. That's what I was told by a member of the 82nd I met when I was a kid. One reason why Winters was so competent is touched on in episode one. When Sobel is punishing Winters he says, "Take the punishment. You spend your weekends on the base." Or something to that effect. That was a true statement. Winters spent spare time reading and studying ever field manual he could get a copy of. He was an extremely detail oriented man. When he planned the assault at Brécourt he was very well prepared to create an on-the-spot plan of action. He also had two catch phrases. "Follow me." "Hang tough." See if you can catch these during the series.

Thanks man! yea I remember them being told to study the maps inside out last ep “until you could draw from memory” or something like that. That’s so cool you got to meet that person! Winters does give me the “class try-hard” kind of thing if you will and clearly pays off dividends because of how effective he is. I’m gonna look out for those catchphrases for sure

@@ItzWilson2 The Longest Day is based on the book of the same name by Cornelius Ryan. Cornelius Ryan also wrote A Bridge Too Far about Operation Market Garden which the Band of Brothers is part of in a (sorta) peripheral role, which is featured in the next episode (S1E4 "Replacements"). They also made a film of that book, with the same name, which is probably my favourite WW2 movie, the cast is equally insane, A-lister after A-lister.

Late in life, Winters confirmed that the story of Spiers gunning down the Germans did happen (he and Spiers were lifelong friends). On D-Day, there was no infrastructure in place to take on POW's, and they couldn't afford to allow the German soldiers to make their way back to their units with the intel of the American position and what they heard

There is a great interview with George Luz’s son about the series on KZitem. He said that Compton picked up a Thompson from a downed soldier. The funny thing is that the firing pin was messed up. The show never mentions it, but during the taking of the guns, you can see Compton’s Thompson fail, and he’s always fiddling with it during the operation. The other thing no one ever talks about is they were actually the second wave of paratroopers to land. Before the assault force Easy was part of the airborne divisions dropped Pathfinders. They brought special lights and radio beacons to guide the assault force planes to their drop zones.

@@ItzWilson2Another thing to notice is that Joe Toye’s (the guy with the brass knuckles) Thompson doesn’t have a stock. During the assault on brecourt, he was actually using an M1 Garand and one of the grenade blasts actually destroyed the stock of the rifle. This meant he couldn’t aim the rifle. They likely changed his weapon to a Thompson in the miniseries because M1A1 Thompson stocks can come off easily.

Following the action of the battles is sometimes difficult, so I highly recommend the channel Operations Room, which has top down animated videos that cover all the details of most of the battles depicted in the show. There is one about the action to take the guns at Brecourt that is shown in this episode, and whether you do a reaction to it or not it is a really good short video to watch. The videos on that channel become increasingly helpful as the series progresses due to the battles getting much more confusing, but also because it was impossible to recreate some of the future battles on the show exactly as they happened in reality...so the Operations Room's analysis will fill you in on all the variances.

The man who was shot in the head while laying in the field talking to Lipton was Warrant Officer Andrew Hill, he came upon the battle while searching for the headquarters of the 506th PIR. 'and dog company, they just, ran outside the trenches and most of them, got gunned down', no, they didn't. I don't think they lost anyone actually. Watch it again, nobody fell, and Spiers was the only one running out of the trench. He was the guy signaling to the rest of them that they had taken the gun.
