Revivals and remakes are even hitting the eastern sphere as well. Uersei Yatsura, which had an anime adaptation that ran from 1981-1986, just had a new anime adaptation that wrapped up. Spice and Wolf (the LN started publishing in 2006, anime in 08 and 09 with a third season planned that was cancelled) is about halfway through it's new anime adaptation. Ranma ½ had two different anime adaptations in the 80's and 90's and was just announced for a new revival last week. I'm sure there are others but those 3 (which I would argue are generally considered classics) all in about a 3 year timespan is a lot of banging on the nostalgia all at once.

I bailed on MAX when they bailed on Children of Wolves and The Nevers, and then started dropping other shows (finished or otherwise) that had been on the platform for years. Now I rarely watch a show until all of the seasons are aired and the story is completed, which rarely happens. All these streaming services have created a feedback loop of viewing behavior they dislike but is the direct result of their own greed. Imagine if painters (artists) all worked for large corporations who forced them to stop painting with half the canvas still blank and then still expected to sell the painting at auction; oblivious to the fact they would sell for a lot more if it was completed.

Prestige TV ain't going no where, mainly because of streaming. People use to watch things out of order and didn't care, we would come in on season 3, at it's peak and start from there. Now we all HAVE to watch from episode 1 and if it isn't good enough by episode 3 no one is going to watch it any further. Shows don't have a chance to really find their voice anymore in the episodic medium. The answer is prestige tv, with hooks in order to get you watching long term from the beginning.
@Darren_Mooney

I think you are more arguing for “serialisation” than prestige television, but I agree that the streaming model is likely to keep serialisation around, but it think it’s separate from prestige. It was a small thing and barely relevant to the topic, but this video made me actually understand something I'd noticed with Westworld, which was how much Westworld felt like it was cramming in sex and gore seemingly to show how unflinching it was. Understanding HBO's historical phase as the company that could do advertiser-unfriendly things makes it make a lot more sense how it was trying a bit too hard to live up to that.

I think their best shows in the last several years have been the ones that hardly anyone watched/watches (at least compared to GOT and TLOU viewership numbers), i.e. The Leftovers, The Deuce, Succession, Barry, and Somebody Somewhere. We are absolutely in the IP age and that massive churn of scripted crap series year over year is just another quantity vs quality that we all have to wade through for our daily entertainment. First season of Westworld was great, that pilot/first episode doesn't fit with your premise of it being a "failed to connect" series. But then they had to IP it some more with the following seasons that I quickly gave up on. Should have just kept it at one. I also watched the whole Meeting Jack Black recently and that's a strange long movie, I'm kinda surprised it showed up here.

"The studio has announced enough potential GoT spinoffs (...)" No. The studio has only announced 2 spinoffs - Hot D and Dunk & Egg. Everything else is rumors and leaks from early development. Every Hollywood studio has dozens if not hundreds of projects "in development" with no real intention of producing all of them. It's throwing shit at the wall and looking what sticks. It's been a practice for decades. And yes, we know about Snow spin-off - it's dead dead dead. In the last year HBO/Max released new seasons of original shows: Hacks, Tokyo Vice, Winning Time, Julia, Scavengers Reign, Our Flag Means Death, How to With John Wilson, Full Circle, Somebody Somewhere. How many you've watched and how many you've mentioned on this or other video? Right, we are all too busy with watching IP based titles.

I actually specifically mention "Tokyo Vice" as one of the Max shows cancelled to make room for more IP. "Winning Time" was also cancelled. "Our Flag Means Death" also cancelled.
