One last point that was more nuanced than is really suited to a video. It is plausible that the wrong which causes a villain to seek control could be perceived rather than legitimately. The important part for the villain is that they believe they were wronged and are fully committed to correcting it no matter the cost.

I don't see a lot of comments on this, but this is really good info for getting the DM juices flowing while writing a campaign.

There are two point I would add: not all characters agree with the interpretation that they are evil. In the Arthas example, he knows killing innocent civilians is bad, even in service to the greater good, and he struggles with it, briefly, before making up his mind. That does not have to be the case. The trolley problem exists for a reason. The other point would be that DMs - particularly inexperienced DMs - should not feel compelled to be "good" at being bad. Playing a villain does not - and should not - come naturally to most people. It takes real effort to not behave the way you normally would as a well-adjusted, good person, and instead behave in a believably evil manner. If you feel that is the case for you, my recommendation would be to do a debate club type of prep with your friends/family/fellow hobbyists to flesh out the rationalizations for your villain.

This is a really great video, for trying to create an interesting villain as a building block. But I’ll point out a bunch of your character analysis of some of the villains you mentioned was pretty off from their actual intentions.😂

We may see their intentions differently but I’m glad you enjoyed the topic!

Inspiring character concepts for an unwitting villain...those who didn't realize that was their path at first. John Cusack in God of War. The Sheriff in Rambo First Blood. Walbridge in You Don't Mess With The Zohan. All the women in First Wives Club, if they keep going after more. The father in Mosquito Cost.

Played a 2e Druid who hated civilization, so he collected cursed items and when at critical mass would gift them to the citizens of the next city that needed to fall. But I absolutley possitively wasn't a villain...
