Another way Wong Kar Wai expressed subtly the passing time was through the food. In some interview he said that some dishes were traditionally made during certain seasons and they were intentionally mentioned in the movie to hint that time has passed and indicate if they are in summer or winter. Wonderful video essay!

This to me is the most tragic love story ever. As they say it is better to have loved and lost than not loved at all. This pretty much sums up the story. By that I mean, it is always better to be able to love someone and experience the full extent of the happiness it brings even if its just for a while, or even if you will have to lose them. Here, the protagonists never even had that chance. They had to end their affair before it can even begin and spend the rest of their lives missing each other. Even more painful is learning that fate is so cruel to them, its keeping them apart. See, when you love and lose later on, you at least can have closure. You at least know it did not work out. But when you know you love the person but never really have the chance to be with them, you would be spending the rest of your life asking the what ifs.

The scenes you talk about at 5:18 are not from different nights. Mrs. Chow tells him that she's staying at work late and not to pick her up because she plans on seeing Mr. Chan that night. Mr. Chow suspects that she's lying and goes to her workplace to check, under the pretext of wanting to take her to dinner. It's meant to parallel the scenes later where Mrs. Chan tells her husband that she'll be working late but actually gets off early to go home to try to catch her husband cheating.

Giving a clock as a gift in Chinese culture may be construed as your wishing death upon the person, as in Chinese, to give a clock (送鐘/送钟, sòng zhōng) has the same pronunciation as "sending off for one's end" (送終/送终, sòngzhōng).

Probably the best video essay on ITMFL I've seen so far ! So relevant ! I've been studying his stuff for a while now and you really grasped many things that are usually unnoticed (while he mentions in interview or magazines). Really awesome ! What do you think about the clocks everywhere in Days of Being Wild then ? 5:51 : WKW indeed built this film on repetition and how time passes through very little and subtle changes (and btw for the clothes changing indicating that time has passed at 6:17 , he used this technique in Chungking Express brilliantly too !) 7:02 : The original Chinese title 花样年华 litteraly translates into Flowers Years

Thank you! The literal translation was what motivated that line for sure ;) for 7:58, I think what I mainly wished to say is that the resulting (somewhat) non linear narrative ITMFL brings is totally fine not simply because it's stitched together naturally, but also because the focus is in those moments individually. So even if they were slightly more unconventionally delivered (i.e. less chronology) it would still feel beautiful - just like our memories and how they do not need to be perfectly linear. And I feel you on the blocked content thing- it certainly is random luck to an extent as well as I have been blocked with a strike before as well..sigh..

Best review I,ve watched (and is the sixth by now). Even though this film is one of my all time favourites, I don´t recommend it. I understand some people who don´t like it. In my opinion, ITWFL is close to poetry: sort of abstract, ambiguous, not easy..and as many of good poetry is more about making you feel than telling you something. Just as poetry, you need to be in the mood for it. One last thing, If seen it three times on screen (last one a couple of weeks ago) and two on tv. This is one of those films you NEED to see on screen because of what I,ve just said about its poetry: if you want to figure out if you like this film, I recommend you immerse yourself in it´s aesthetic proposition.

Good analysis, except that it occult the fact they had sex together in Singapour, that's why, we see Mrs Chan with a child at the end, and that's why Mr Chow goes to Cambodia to burry his secret. If no, how to explains he would go to Cambodia if they had never sleep together... That's how I understand the film.
