Small fun fact: Quentin Tarantino has said publically that this is one of his favorite movies of all time. When he was writing the script for Kill Bill Vol.1, he got in contact with actress Chiaki Kuriyama, who played Girl No.13 Takako Chigusa in this film, and wrote the part of Gogo Yubari especifically for her, based on her portrayal of Takako.

@@meshach9510 Well, there's some details not explained here: It is stated in the movie that only one class of 42 students is chosen every year. So it wouldn't impact society that much, at least in terms of population. The big thing is that they changed the backstory from the original book too much. In the book universe, Japan is in a totalitarian government, very similar to North Korea (it is said in the book that they are allies). The BR Act, which is the name of the law for the Battle Royale program, was made as a way to put fear and control the population. Every year, a class of 3rd grade junior high students is selected at random to be in the program.

This movie looks interesting! The ending was a pleasant surprise. I have been seeing plenty of movie recaps lately, and usually characters like Noriko end up dying in these kinds of movies, so it was such a relief for me to see that she survived along with the main character Shuya. Too bad about Shogo dying though. He pretended to betray the main characters so that he could trick the battle royale coordinators into thinking that there was only one survivor, so that all three of them could leave the battle. (Their collars had microphones.) That was very noble of him.

Eh. I feel like there are a lot of stupid plot points and things that don’t make sense. So they have a declining population and all the kids are dropping out of school to become criminals? So they decide to kill the kids that still go to school and aren’t criminals yet further decreasing the population and increasing their problem. And they only kill like one class per a year so overall it will barely affect things. And the one survival is pretty much guaranteed to become a huge criminal now they’ve killed all their friends. You don’t just recover from that like it never happened.

@@Sumirevins The Survivor, a short story written by Walter F. Moudy in 1965, had some Battle Royal themes for sure. It was set during the 2050 Olympic war games between the United States and Russia. In it, 100 soldiers from each side are sent into an arena to kill each other, broadcast on live television. Any survivors are regarded as heroes, and basically able to get away with anything they want. I wouldn't say the BR genre came from this, but I imagine influences keep going.

How many Japanese films are there about students getting punished because of their good/bad grades? Very uncreative people obsessed with schooling the Japanese

Its a genre. Just like how the dystopian fantasy is a genre. This was released in the 90s and has a sequel. Alot of people think Hunger Games plagiarised Battle Royale but the creator claims she didnt know about this which I call cap

This movie was the first of its kind. This movie is the reason why battle royale games exist today.

It for sure wasnt the first death game story however, not even the first movie Examples: The Long Walk (book from like 50 years ago or smth) or The Running Man (movie from 1987, based on a short story) Not exactly "battle royale" but pretty damn close

The briefing on the rules of the contest are the best ever delivered. How to give bad news in an encouraging way. Newscasters should do this when reporting natural disasters and war atrocities and 9-11 and MAX 8 lawn darts.

My favourite scene in this movie is the teachers death. After getting rained on by a machine gun, he gets up like "Hey that hurt!" gets shot again and dies. Then his phone rings so he gets up, walks over, sits on the couch, chats on the phone a bit, shoots the phone, has a little snack, then dies finally lol. All whilst the students are on the floor looking at him like 👁👄👁 only moment of comic relief
