Thank you for posting this 40-year old documentary. A very precious video that one cannot find easily these days. A nation is too heavy on one individual to try to do anything, especially in such a difficult time. I did not know somehow humiliating end of this great person. As long as he lived in the era of Meiji his life was full of hope and success. He lived “too long” to live the stagnant and toxic early Showa. 新渡戸さんひとりではどうにもならなかった時代ですね。このドキュメンタリーは80年代の雰囲気が伝わってきてとても懐かしい思いで見ました。あの頃はちょうど日本が第二の経済大国で自動車で日米貿易摩擦でもめていた時代でした。今としてはこれも少し懐かしい。 これほどの知の巨人でも太平洋戦争目前の日米関係には手の打ちようがなかった。自分でも納得できるはずもない立場で米国や国際社会に発信せざるを得なかったのは実に屈辱だったのではないでしょうか。それでも亡命といった手段を選ばなかったところが、日本人だなと思いました。
