There is one unnecessary jumpscare early in the movie --- all jumpscares after that point are purely story-related and are critical in the portrayal of trauma. 5 / 5. ♥

I really enjoyed this one. It wasn’t as good as Martyrs granted, but it did work for me on a creepy level. I wasn’t a fan of the jump scares like you said, but I loved how it ended!

I prefer this slightly over Martyrs for its atmosphere, acting, and intense violent sequences, and didn’t even notice the jump scares outside of the mirror doll scene which I thought was effectively creepy. I saw the twist coming a mile away which is my only complaint with the movie

I definitely got the impression that the last scene in the ambulance was meant to be her escaping reality again...him saying "you're stuck with me" followed by her saying, as her final line in the film, "I like to make up stories," I thought made it pretty clear that at the very least, we shouldn't trust this as reality. Incidentally, I did a video analysis of Sucker Punch a while back, and while researching it, I found that there's a pretty substantial female fanbase for that film who absolutely love it. Critics, on the other hand, just seemed interested in labeling people sexist, whether they liked it or didn't like it. It's so weird.

So I’ve never seen Martyrs even though I’ve had it recommended a lot (hoping to see it soon) but I just picked this movie up at the dollar tree for $1 with the slipcover and went in completely blind. I didn’t even read what it was about so simply going off the title I threw this in expecting a simple paranormal film with jump scares throughout and instead I got a really surprisingly intense movie. Maybe it’s just that I was shocked going in blind but this movie disturbed me some. I never really say that and I’ve seen some shit but I’m actually really glad I went in not knowing anything about this or the director. Had I known I don’t think it would have had the impact it did. Really cool movie!

*MAJOR SPOILER ALERT!* This is one of the best horror movies of all time! Every time I watch it I gain a deeper understanding of what’s going on which only serves to make the movie more scary than the last time I watched it! *The girls never get out of the house!* Even at the end when you think they’ve been rescued... they haven’t! Beth starts dreaming again just as her hand starts to get burned by the big guy. She never stabs the guy in the shoulder, they never escape and come across the police, they are in the house the whole time. You’ll notice she hits the big guy with the typewriter which is an indication she is dreaming. At the end she looks up at the window to see her mother pointing out of the window at the typewriter, another indication she’s dreaming. I now see a deeper meaning to this movie. Beth represents us, the people, living in and amongst a spiritual battle between good and evil that we’re unable to see. Vera represents our souls that are taking a constant beating from androgynous demonic entities, represented by the two evil psychopaths. If only we could see the spiritual battle going on around us, every time we are tempted by and succumb to sin within this world, our souls are under attack from demonic entities that are becoming more and more powerfull as time moves forward in this crazy world we live in. Vera screaming at Beth to wake up and see what’s going on, is one of the most powerful and symbolic scenes I’ve ever seen in a horror movie.

I was disappointed .I guess I was expecting too much, it isn't scary, disturbing or thought provoking enough and i was honestly confused at the end. I'm guessing it's a metaphor but it's beyond me. And who/what was the dark, long haired killer that came out of the van after chubby bald guy?

I loved Shutter Island- i hadn't seen it at the cinema or watched any trailers and went in blind after picking it up on dvd and loved it from first viewing and i had no questions unanswered, i thought it wrapped it all up nicely if people had paid attention. 'Incident In a ghostland' sounds so promising and briefly reminded me of why i started writing- because you can create what you want- the perfect family, an exciting life, an epic romance and when my mother read my first book and thought that she'd inspired me to write an epic mother- i couldn't stop laughing and said- ''I'm creating fantasy not rewriting history''

Before I get into your spoilers; Spoiler: If you have seen Stay (2005) Ryan gosling, Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts, the late great Bob Hoskins with a great plot, editing, script & performances. Most importantly it’s an interesting 2nd or 3rd watch; Ghostland was coping mechanism plot device whiplash with no order or mystery. The movie feels like he watched House of 1000 Corpses, Stay, & 1408; then wanted to mix them together😬 Completely different subject how is there a twist ending to antebellum when they show you the “twist” in the trailer... Even if you’re dreaming of the future how can you know what it is if you never been there. Saw you in modern clothing with modern friends; should have been named: Get Out of the Antebellum Hostel Village Handmaiden!

Actress name is Crystal Reed ( One of my top favorite actresses) This movie drove me crazy at times and a lot of answers weren’t made or maybe I missed them. I have no clue I plan to review it soon. It wasn’t a bad movie just left me completely confused in some parts.

Are you sure this movie is in your reality or part of your fantasyland. Sounds like an odd movie. I might even check it out at some point. I've been on a Night of the creeps kick the past few days. I think I noticed the fog remake on your shelf. I must say I chuckled.

Ok...I watched Spooky Astronauts talk about this awhile back and she said the same thing about trying not to compare it to Martyrs. My thought was, why not? Dexy’s Midnight Runners came out of the gate with Come On, Eileen expecting us to like their second best song? 😁 I LOVE Sucker Punch!!! Down with the haters!!!
