This video shows the difference between Income Tax Expense and Income Tax Payable. Income Tax Expense represents all income taxes accrued during a period, regardless of the period in which the income taxes will be paid. Income Tax Payable generally represents the income taxes that are currently due and must be paid to the government within the next year (thus, Income Tax Payable is typically a current liability on the balance sheet). This video provides an example to show how Income Tax Expense and Income Tax Payable can differ due to a temporary tax difference. The video then uses journal entries to show how Income Tax Expense and Income Tax Payable are recorded.
This video was funded by a Civic Engagement Fund grant from the Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement at Washington University in St. Louis.
