The Alps are a major mountain range located in Central Europe. Its highest peak is Mont Blanc, with 4810 meters of altitude. Around the Alps, favored by major rivers flow uniform and rich farmland, were located from various prehistoric peoples, primarily Celts as the Burgundians, leucos, Lombards, Helvetii and then north-Germanic or Italic peoples after conquest of Gaul by Julius Caesar.
As elevation in the Andes of the most important mountains beyond six thousand meters in the Himalayas and eight thousand, the Alps mountain range is explained as a succession of mountains over four thousand meters. There are numerous mountains over four thousand meters.
With geological and geographical criteria can be divided into three distinct areas:
• The Western Alps, which would go from the lower elevations near the Mediterranean Sea to the Valais. The Maritime Alps and the Mont Blanc are the most important blocks.
• The Central Alps, from the Valais to the Grisons. All Valais with the most important massif of the Alps, Monte Rosa and the Oberland.
• The Eastern Alps, covering the rest of the mountain range to the east and south. The Tyrol, Julian Alps and the Dolomites are the most important formations. Latest elevations in this direction reach the first of another great massif: the Carpathians.
